i do the external filter and dump the fluid from the pan every 30,000 and did the internal at 90,000
Filters are i think 15-20 bucks and 8 qts of mercon SP
My recollection is not perfectly clear on this. I believe it was around $180 for 18 quarts of fluid, flushing the trans and replacing the internal filter/screen. Had it done at 20K because I use my truck to tow frequently.
They did not change the external filter (FT-145) so I changed it myself.
My dealer quoted something like 195 but I did it myself because they do not change either the internal or external filter. Be sure to ask about the filters if you have it done anywhere.
The exteranal filter was 36.11 for the filter and 55.00 for labor. Next time I will do that portion for sure.

Talk about markup! I pay $21 for the filters at the local Ford dealer and it takes maybe 10 minutes to change - if you're slow. I change the external filter every 10K.
$300.00 for the flush at the Dealer. Pan was not dropped, it is just a screen in there anyway. Truck was hooked to a machine and run for 30 minutes to clean & suspend the particles, then the entire system was flushed.
I just asked the dealer to do this for me the other day till they gave me a price of $350.00...my jaw dropped, i told them to just leave a $20 filter in the cab and i will just change that. the oil still smells like cherries it should be alright just to change ext filter?
what do you guys think?

Ford is pretty specific on this matter. The service manual states "The transmission fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles regardless of normal or special operating conditions". In the unlikely event you have a transmission problem under warranty the failure to follow recommended service procedures could be just what your dealer needs to deny warranty repair. It seems like a couple of hundred dollars for a flush and fill is cheap compared to the cost of a new tranny. If you're planning to keep the truck for a long time proper maintenance will pay off in the long run.
The fluid for the torqshift is expensive. My receipt is broken down like this:
Trans Service $95
Filter $28
Fluid $88
The total was $278
Plus I had them do the fuel filters while it was there. so the total was $419 with tax and incidentals.
The thing is, if you do decide to just do the pan and fluid associated with that. That is your choice.
My decision to have it done was this: It is a new vehicle, an expensive vehicle, I'm keeping it for a LOOOOONG time. So I will follow all maintenance schedules. Flushing the tranny cleans out all the sediment in the cooler and lines and all that junk gets drawn out when they push in the new fluid. There are so many electronic controls and valving in theses trannies, I don't want to be stuck on the side of the road pulling the camper with a cooked trans.
Plus the warranty on the trans is only 36,000 miles.
FYI, I did notice a difference in the trans when I put it in gear and when it shifted.
All guys on here in the n.metro atlanta area, i called Jim Tidwell Ford in Kennesaw, Ga and for a complete fluid and external filter change its only $165. Just thought i would share the wealth for the metro atlanta guys on here.
Is the only "proper way" to service these trannies to flush with a machine. I have my own shop and I could service the trans my self with all the filters and fluid but I am not sure that is good enough. I am willing to pay someone else if this is not the proper way to service this trans. I need this truck to last and be dependable for me.
I did my first tranny fluid change at 30k miles myself. I also put in a deep tranny pan at that time, so I did have to add an extra 4 quarts of SP. It was a pretty easy change and the internal filter had nothing in it! I decided to change my external filter and drain the fluid out of the pan every 15k miles and it should be fine. The oil at 30k miles was just as clean as the new stuff I put in there. Some of the sponsors have SP as cheap as $3.85/qt and the filter is $10-20. The external oil filter was the only thing that looked like it needed changing.
UGA33, for $165, I'd be temped to let them flush my tranny! I was quoted $320 and that didn't include either filter.
