Additives

Before you lynch me- I tried a search and a whole bunch of irrelevant stuff popped up. What, if any, additives should I be running in my truck? I've heard they don't care much for the ULSD and that additives will help keep things happy, any truth to this? What works and what doesn't? Keep in mind, I've got a HUGE tank to pour it into and not a lot of options without driving at least 100 miles.

I run what the fuel company my father works for spikes all of their diesel with, it's called cold flow. Honestly though, something is needed with the ULSD, bio is best.

Bio fuel is the absolute best for the lubricity. However, bio does have its problems. First off it is more susceptale to water and moisture. Second, it bacteria and algae grow a lot sooner and more in bio. Thirdly, Bio fuel does not have a very good strorage life, about half of what regular diesel has. Last but not least, it gells sooner that regular diesel. I would recommend a quality additive like Schaeffers Diesel Treat 2000. Schaeffers will treat both the Bio and regular Diesel. How big is the tank that you want to treat? I know a lot of people that run including myself and like it a lot. I see about 1mpg difference in fuel economy.

jrciii56, I can't say with any kind of certainty how big the tank on my truck is- when I went to test drive it (just bought it last Sunday) the low fuel light was on, salesman put in 5 gallons. Drove 10-15 miles or so, dickered with them, then bought the truck and drove 30 miles to a card-lock fuel station. I put 45 gallons in and shut the hose off because I couldn't take it anymore! I've since drove about 300 miles so I've probably got in the neighborhood of 40 gallons in the tank still.
So far I've heard DK and Schaeffers, what's the story on Stanadyne? Somewhere there was a post recently comparing the different additives but I can't seem to find it. Also what is the cost of some of these additives? Bio is out, I don't think I can buy it anywhere around here.

I'm parroting here, but from what I've read, Stanadyne is really good (but can be hard to get), DK is not quite as good (but easy to get at WM for ~$16 and enough to treat 300 gallons), and I'm sure Schaeffer's Diesel Treat is good. I just got a sample of it, but haven't tried it just yet. I filled up with bio the last time, so I'll try it my next full tank of pure dino...

EDIT: I've been running DK pretty much since I bought my truck, and it's been working. My tank was spotless when I dropped it for the Hutch/Harpoon. I run the white bottle in winter and gray in summer.

I use DK in every tank of diesel. I use .5 oz per gal diesel.

Here is an attachment that compares the differences in additives. Read the fine print before looking at the results. You will find some interesting information about how the test was conducted. Optilube was the only one that got to submit their sample.

The most important thing to know about that study is they used **UNTREATED**, dry ULSD. The fuel you get will have additives put in by the producer! So even though some of the products (specifically, the DieselKleen I use) added little to the lubricity, it did add some. So as long as you don't get completely untreated ULSD (highly unlikely), you will be okay with some of the others not at the top of the list. It is very interesting that only a B2 mix does so much for lubricity. Make me want to get a couple 5 gallon jugs to fill with BD and add a gallon of that instead of DK every tank.

Wasn't trying to be a smartass -- I went to the link. Is there something there in particular you're referring to or are you just posting a link to another forum (which is against the rules on FTE, BTW).
