So, I have the classic shifter slip. The orange indicator and the gear selector levor move together but the play seems to be in the column. As you select down from park, it is hard to tell and I have been having problems when I try to shift to Drive and I end up in second gear.
I hope this is clear.
It's your shifter linkage cable. My truck was doing it and I neglected to fix it. Then when I was towing my 7500 lb tractor I got stuck in low gear (1). I suggest takin it to the nearest shop and have them retune the shifter as well as put in a new cable. It's only like $150-$225 to do everything depending on where you go.
You might be able to. I'm not sure. I was just concerned when it happened to just get it to the shop and on the lift before my tranny burned up. Although they did say they had to take off part of the steering column inside the cab in order to reach the top part of the cable.
he said that the slector arrow moved with the selector lever COON, so either the bushings are wore, or probelms in the linkage dept. You can fix this easily either way. Neither are brain surgery, just ask questions, as there is a write up for anything and everything about these trucks on this site.
Does the selector feel like it has little or no resistance, or does it just flop around on its own??

Why don't you explain it ,since you already know what it is ...I'm all eyes ...
his post is unclear to me, he says the lever and indicator move together but he cant tell what gear its going into. to me that could be as simple as the indicator is out of alignment and is showing the wrong gear. it could also be a wore out cable, but even so you should feel the clicks from each detent in the tranny. thus the reason for my asking for clarification

Mine is loose from 175,000 miles & plowed since new ...Its not the cable.. the bolts to the shifter are not loose ,,,lets me believe the bushings & the detent are worn...The selector goes with the shifter as would be expected ,,,detent is not as tight as I would like...
