I have a set of each. I'll be using both, but I don't know which car to put which on.
Both sets are off a 302, btw.
The C9's have a smaller combustion chamber, I can see that right off the bat. But are there any other differences I should know about before deciding which go on my '69 Mustang and which go in my DD?
The 88 LTD heads are dandy boat anchors. Good for bottom end torque, but not much else. E5TE's are the same head as the later E7TE. 64 cc chambers. If those C9OE's have 8 intake bolt holes and "L" shaped coolant ports, they're the "good" 351W heads with 1.84/1.54 valves and larger ports.
My grandfather told me he had the head's redone when he had headgaskets done, and he had it setup to run unleaded. I though he had said something about replacing the valves, but it's been awhile.
For the mustang I bet you want more HP so whatever set you port will make more, and it's not hard to improve any of these casting with a carbide bit and some elbow grease.
If it were me I would do the E7’s up…. They are pedestal mount so easy roller rocker install, no guide plates, no hardened push rods and no exhaust seats even if you go to a 1.60 exhaust valve. I opened my e7s to 1.94 1.60 valves the machinist said he was still in the factory induction hardness (or whatever they call it) when he was done… and after 3 years they are still holding up just fine…and the cost of cutting the seats and bowls to 1.94 1.60 is no more than a regular valve job. You would just need to buy the valves, spring, retainers, locks and roller rockers. Then port them, there is plenty of info out there on porting small block heads. You would be surprised how much of a difference it will make.
