O.K. as a lot of you know I have been researching turbos as of late. I had actually ordered a 1.0 housing for my stocker, but then after a little more research have decided to go with a van turbo and ATS housing

here are a couple of things about the stockers, the van, and the GTP38R

stock turbo 99.5 to 03 (gt38)
.84 a/r drive housing
1.0 a/r compressor housing
journal bearings
straight vane compressor wheel
wastegate
ebpv

Van trubo 99.5-03 (gtp38)
1.15 a/r drive housing
1.0 a/r compressor
journal bearings
same compressor wheel as above
NO wastegate
NO ebpv
must use a exhaust outlet adapter to mate to exhaust down pipe on a super duty

Garrett GTP38R
1.0 or 1.15 a/r drive housing(your choice)
1.10 compressor housing
double vane wheel
ported housing with larger inducer
Ball Bearings
NO wastegate
NO EBPV.

now to really confuse you. You can order from vendors (beans, swamps, PDP,DI,ITP) a 1.0 drive housing with or without an ebpv and put it on your turbo, it will reduce the drive pressure on the journal bearings to allow the stock turbo to boost higher without risk of bearing damage.

ATS housing is a compressor side housing that is ported, and also has a larger inducer.

A van turbo with an ATS housing is very close to the GTP38R, with one exception, no ball bearings.

A wicked wheel is the same as a banks wheel, and both are the same as the wheel that came on the smaller early 99 turbo from the factory

Now, in case you were wondering, it is best to change out your pedistal to a blank(no ebpv actuator) when upgrading to a non ebpv turbo. this ensures proper oil flow to the turbo bearings

I have a question, I have the WW on its way, and am wondering if it would be a wise choice to have the inlet on the housing machined out just a little to make it larger while I have it apart, or just port it alittle. Not sure if any of this would make a difference. But while it's apart, going to do whatever I can with it,before it goes back together.

This is not entirely true. The GTP38R comes with the WG assembly. I had to remove that. It also comes with the EBV provision if you prefer to keep that. It ships with the 1.0 housing that I promptly removed. Remember, it is sold as a drop in replacement.

Aside from this, good post.
Edit: whoops, I thought all Van Turbos came with a 1.0 housing.

Now I see all the differences right there next to each other. Makes perfectly good sense to me and hopefully others as well.

Thanks for clearing that up on the GTP38R Mike, 99-03 Van turbos come with the 1.15 housing, 94-97's were the 1.0 housing
