I drove my friends truck and he has the same turbo as me but his sounds totally different.his has a growling or howling whistle to it and mine is just a little louder whistle then the stock turbo.Even if i rev it in neutral i can here it howling. Are there different 38r that Garrett made?
Different things can affect the sound you preceive but mainly the intake can muffle or even make it more pronounced. To my knowledge and checking with my Garrett rep, Garrett has never made or changed the 38R design.
ever since they fixed the seal issues a lot of people heard a diff in sound...if they did more then fix the seal they will not tell us any ways...that way TN cant copy it...Dave Lott is tight with garrett and he said they fixed a few issues back when you couldnt buy a 38R..

So which 38r would be louder the older ones or the newer 38r ,newer meaning if I would buy one today ?
I drove kupaa's truck many times and his turbo sounds like my stock turbo .
Not like every one is saying the 38r is to loud .

Hey Ron. I'm a little confused about a couple thing you posted here. I'm wondering why garrett would worry about TN steeling their design when TN stoped selling their turbo when garrett started selling their turbo again? My other question is, why would garrett lie to one of their dealers, but if someone was tight with them, they would tell them the truth?
Ron, why is it you turn up in every thread RiffRaff posts in second guessing everything he says? Last week it was he was "rebuilding" 38Rs. Then there were two styles of 38Rs. Today it's the AIH mod in another thread. Then you post new info about the 38R that contradicts what you got all worked up about last week. You seem so determined to differ with Clay even if you are wrong...

IIRC, Dennis (ITP Diesel) posted about the same thing in a thread on another site (can't remember which site) regarding issues customers were having with noise complaints regarding their 38R's.
Dennis had them sent back to Garrett and when the customer reinstalled the turbo's, they were quieter.
I'll try and do a search on the different forums later today and see if I can find what I'm talking about.

Stewart
this took place before before most of you new what FTE was..maybe even just before i sighned up or shortly after..but Both 38R and TN had the same issue with seals blowing only TN was not only the seal..its was the shafts as well...garrett already had that beat before TN could..the 38R has a bigger stronger shaft...I think Stewart's post was the answer to the cure of both noise and seals...this newer turbo does not chatter, bark or howl any where near as bad as the older ones..that chatter cant be good on parts..im sure it lead to seals getting worn out....there was no where near as many 38 R blowing up as the TN ..but Garrett wanted a good long lasting turbo out there if it was going to have the Garrett name so they just re did them rather then just give up...that's when TN become very popular...you couldn't find a new 38 R for a while so people got the TN... the newer 38 R came out and now you cant find a new TN any where....maybe cause they don't know how to fix the issue..maybe they cant because Garrett beat them to it.. ......but I think its too late for TN to make a come back....
what truck do you think the 38 R was tested on and helped design the 38R when the 38R first came to market??? Hint,, it was the worlds fastest power stoke...do you know who owns that truck???. and no it wasnt the fastest with the 38R lol..
Ron, can you post up a link on this information. I would like to know more on the problems with the TN I have. I don't mean a thread from some forums, I would like to see the test that you are talking about. I heard different stories on why the Garrett was not available and about the problems with both. Thanks.
not sure what you mean Rick..real world was the only test to find the problems these turbo's had...when they get so many complaints..they look for a way to fix it or they just stop making them...test showed the 6.0 was going to be a good motor...real world proved the test wrong...Ford did a lot of things to fix problems till they got it some what right in 05...the 38R didnt come to market till after the SD 7.3 Power stroke did..so it was going though its trial and error back then...so far it has been real world proven to be good..a lot of guy are pushing 500HP through them and there still holding up....
FWIW, I rode in one truck with a 38R on it that was REDICULOUSLY loud, sounded like a siren. NOT the typical turbo whistle sound. The owner spoke to Garrett about it, and they didn't offer much help. That was going on 2 years ago now... no idea what ever came of it.
Ron, you may recall from another thread that I spoke with Garrett last week and they maintain that there was only ever 1 38R. No old, no new. No difference. None.
That and are you avoiding my question earlier in this thread?
Very interesting. This old versus new 38R should be interesting to the new owners of these turbos. Is it really a new design, hum. not sure just turbo seals would quiet this beast up, just saying. Got the popcorn out..
