Im personally not a big fan of flux core wire, leaves a nasty spatter every where. Just from what ive used of it, i prefer non flux wire and a bottle. Any reason to go with flux core instead of with the gas?
There are ways around the splatter. Lincoln has an aerosol spray that you can spray on the work before welding to reduce the spatter. It actually works very well, as the little beads just roll off. As for why use flux core, it makes it easier to not have to lug a bottle around with the welder. My lincoln with the gas says it can weld a max of 1/4", with flux core it will go up to 5/16".
Kjett,
not downing your work at all but Ive never seen that much beef on a mud racers hook points. Im guessing you have 50-75lbs of extra weight. The guys I know who are still running full frames have a 3/4 shackle run through the rear of the frame where the factory bumper would go. The full out tube frame guys I know dont run one at all. The just hook the tube frame incase they break something or bog down.
Might be something to think about.

Yeah, I know the rear is overkill for a racer and all, but I wanted to make sure it would get me out. The D-rings were just something I had laying around and decided to use them and they will serve double duty as the trailer tie down points and will be where I hook my "crane" to pick each end up instead of using a floor jack. I broke 2 jacks last year trying to pick the truck up on un-even ground. I'm done with that garbage!
The front box will serve as a base for the tilt front end, trailer tie down points, and again to hook the crane to pick the truck up for tire changes (I will be running in 5 different tire size classes that are 33, 36, 39.5, 44, and tractor/paddle tires).

Ya there are a lot of advantages to using flux core wire, the splat er you are running into is from trying to feed to much wire into the weld( normally) or could be that your wire feed is clamped to hard on the wire causing it to collapse, Flux wire because of its hollow deign ( were the flux is located) has a smaller of a diameter so is doesn't take as much current to get a flux wire into spray transfer, ( witch if done write has little to no splatter) that's why flux has a different sound then solid wire, witch likes to stay in short circuit transfer, nothing wrong with it but spray is generally a better type of transfer when it comes to welding heavier stuff. But it boils down to personal preference, and as long as your welds hold when you need them to.
probably just my welding technique but i always get a bad spatter when i use flux core wire, but when i use wire gas combo, then i dont have the spatter, i just didnt know if maybe you got a better weld or what with using flux core wire, i personally prefer the gas. I had a dolly rig that i had fixed up, like a regular moving dolly, was clamps and misc things on botom the actual welder was about 1 foot of the ground, had a hook on the side for the gun and cable, and right above the welder sat the bottle, it wasnt very big, designed to be a carry around. Then the jacket and hood hang on a hook at the top. I'll get a pic of it, next time im in san antonio.
BTW- You can use cooking spray (veggie oil) to prevent weld splatter as well, I almost forgot about that.
I've used it a few times, it works pretty well to keep splatter from sticking, you just have to reapply it a few times since it burns off around the weld.
