the code that gets triggered most commonly by an aftermarket exhaust, on an early 6.0l, is P0401(insufficient EGR flow)...i had this code come up alot after the first round of O6E17 reflashes...me and my dealer tech went through everything trying to find what was causing the code...even replacing the EGR cooler, thinking it may be a restriction...came down to the flash...the programming was made much more sensitive to EGR flow...
my understanding is that EGR flow is proofed by both IAT1 and IAT2...there should be a difference of x* when the EGR valve is open because the hot exhaust gasses are being introduced to the intake charge...with that being stated, boost leaks(or any intake leak), can skew the readings to IAT2 and the programming is so sensitive that it thinks EGR flow is reduced..sometimes these leaks can be very, very, very small...
my experience is that the MIL would pop up while towing hard for a little while with my T/B exhaust and cat in place...for a year my exhaust has been more free flowing and i can't remember the last time it popped a code..might have been another flash adjustment, I don't know..
i run a scan guage II in the cubby..i could see the code when it came up...if it's a P0401, i don't worrry about it...
otherwise, almost 4 years/65K miles (mostly towing) with a T/B exhaust and no problems....you have an 03 turbo(as I do)..if you go AM exhaust, be prepared for some strange looks from people wondering what you have under the hood...i LOVE the sound of mine...
Ok thank you, that ansers everything. What is the sound difference with and without a muffler on the 4", is it a big difference or small?
Without a muffler on the Excursion, you will notice a difference in the sound of a 4" exhaust. You'll certainly hear more of a deep rumble and more turbo whistle as well.
I picked mine up at Thoroughbreddiesel.com. I got the Aluminized package and the shipping was included in the price. The only part of the exhaust that anyone ever sees is the tip anyways unless you have a show X so I figured that Aluminized would work for me.
Is there a cheeper way to buy it if you want to strait pipe it other than buying the turbo back and the delete pipes? 500 compaired to 350 is a big difference when you wont even be using the muffler.
DO NOT USE AN AIR FILTER WITH OIL IN IT!! ..The oiled air filters will toast your turbo!!
I disagree.
For the 7.3's, the AFE Stage 2 Pro Guard 7 OILED filters are well known for their excellent filtration properties, second only to the Ford AIS system.
K&N seems to get a bad rap for letting too much dust get by. Some will argue it isn't because of the filtration, but is actually caused because of poor fitment.
Either way, check the 6.0L PSD forum and see what those guys are using and swear by. In the 7.3L forum, it seems to be AIS, the 6637 setup, and the AIS PG7.
I disagree with the oil filter comment as well. I have an air raid systema nd when I do take it out to clean you can wipe your finger inside the air chamber and not a spec a dirt. If properly installed and checked from time to time to make sure tight fit I cannot imagine it being an issue. Otherwise compnay would be out of business. Any filter element that is not properly fitted and sealed up will cause turbo disaster. Turbos downt like dirt particles no matter how big. By the way orderd my 4" mbrp yesterday.
