My turbo went out on the weekend while driving down a long hill. Heard a noise( bang) and looked out the back and saw sparks and flame come out the exhaust. Lost boost and it was up and down till i got to a gas station to check the oil as now i was having a smoke trail.Put in 1 gal. Pulled it off and took it to the shop that had rebuilt it 4 months ago.
They called today and said something from the exhaust took out the exhaust wheel.
What could have done that? Motor ran fine except for the excsessive smoke from the turbo bearing seal wrecked.
Hopefully the gurus on here can point me in the right direction to look.
I can't see anything from your exhaust manifold or up pipes that could have destroyed the turbine. maybe a tip of a glowplug? but that would destroy the piston, did you put a pyrometer in the manifold? i think there blowing smoke up your ***, more than what was coming out of your tailpipe.
Sparks from the exhaust? Not good! Sparks are metal particles which are suspended in air.
I would get with the repair shop and let them know. There is a chance parts were introduced to the cylinder and out the exhaust valve Or, what you may have been witnessing was pieces of rings being expelled.
Diesel is a combustible, no evidence of flame, sparks, or anything else should ever be seen leaving the exhaust.
If the Turbo self-destructed, the same is true.
I certainly hope this is not the case. I would make them do a Compression Test with written results for your records. This is a must.

The thing is , is that after I dumped 6 liters of oil in it, it ran fine ,other than lots of smoke because of the turbo seal , and could only build about 16lbs of boost.
I pick the turbo up tomorrow and will talk to the tech guy. Maybe the pyro probe broke off inside. I am a little reluctant to try and remove it until I get another one In case it snaps off. It looks pretty rusty so I would imagine it is not going to come out easily.
UPDATE- Picked up the turbo and talked to the rebuilder. He said something hit the exhaust wheel. He showed me where it was slightly bent a few of wheels tips and there were larger chunks taken out as well. that is probably what the sparks were coming out the exhaust. they gave me back the old parts and gave me another new turbo . Nice that they stand behind there stuff Company name is ADP distributers. Now 64$ question, what hit the wheel? We shall see how the rig runs when I get it back in this weekend.

UPDATE: Pics of Wheel. Do not know what caused it because EGT probe is still working. I will need to order another one before I attempt to remove the old one. looks pretty rusty. Truck runs great again.

Anyone have any thoughts on what else it might have been?
