I recently had my 3-spd tranny rebuilt, and the guy had to replace the old chewed up speedo gear that is located on the output shaft with a different one, which has different number of teeth. Now, when I'm traveling down the road at 30mph, for example, the speedometer reads 50mph!
Does anyone know who might sell a selection of gears from which I could buy the correct numbered-tooth gear that will replace the speedometer cable drive gear to acquire the correct gear ratio?
Is it true that I could just walk into a Ford dealer and see if they still have these old parts available?
I'm not sure what kind of gear he put in. I could probably call him and see if he remembers. I just know that it does mesh properly with the drive gear, but it certainly has a different number of teeth (he even told me this). I'll find out how many teeth my current speedometer drive gear on the cable currently has, and maybe I can figure it out from there...

You can walk into a Ford dealer but without the following info, they can't help you.
Don't be a bit surprised if...even with the correct info, they give you the usual BS that your truck is too old, they don''t have books that go back that far, the part is obsolete...yadda yadda yadda...the usual BS they tell ppl.
The gear on the output shaft is called a drive gear.
The gear on the end of the speedo cable is the driven gear.
There are dozens of drive gears, to get the correct one, the rear end ratio and the tire size must be known.
Post the info, I'll give you the CORRECT part number...even search for one.
That'll save you from being insulted by the beetle brained idiots that inhabit most Ford parts counters today.
Alright then, I'll have to get back to you guys tomorrow, as I'll need to call this guy for the drive gear info as well as go check out my driven gear, wheel size, etc..

This will help determine what the original part number was for the drive gear > >
Is the gear plastic or steel?
If plastic, what color is it?
How many teeth and do the teeth run this away: ///// or that away \\\\\ ?
The driven gear could be plastic, it might be steel with a fiber gear pressed on to it.
The plastic driven gears are also color coded and have between 15 and 21 teeth.
Okay, here's all the info I could get on the driven gear:
It has 16 teeth. The picture makes it look redish, but it is really more purple/red in color.
Here's a picture of it:
As soon as I can, I'll try to get in touch with the guy who rebuilt and installed the different-size drive gear in the transmission, so I can get you the other half of the info...
Okay NumberDummy, I called the guy and got the info about the drive gear. He told me that it is an 8 tooth gear.
He then went on and asked me what the driven gear was, and I told him a 16 tooth gear, and he said that he had a little plug-in equation which he used to tell what new driven gear I would need. He said a 20 or 21 tooth driven gear should do it.
But I still would like your input, or if this is wrong, what I actually need. Thanks a lot.
