Exclamation 5.0 EFI won't start when warm

I have an 87 bronco w/ the 5.0 EFI and i only seem to have problems starting after the engine gets up to operating temp. The starter seems to drag a bit and the engine sputters a bit like its trying to start. If i let the engine cool a bit (about 30 minutes) it will start fine. I've also noticed a problem with the starter relay on the fender. The post that has the lead to the starter gets very hot (almost burns the skin) after reaching operating temp. I believe this could be part of the problem.

I've had this bronco for about a year and it has acted like this from the beginning. The alternator looks like it is new and some rewiring from the alternator has been done. Could some bad wiring be the cause? Why else would the post on the starter side of the relay get so hot?

If anyone can help that has had this problem or knows where i can find a GOOD wiring diagram for this truck, i would gladly appreciate it!

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

replace both negative and positive battery cables with 0-2 gauge cable. take your starter down to the parts store and have it tested as well. make sure that your battery is good and terminals are clean so when you install everything there is good contact.

Hmm.. If the solenoid gets hot that means it's passing a lot of current, which means the starter motor is as well, which means the motor is very hard to rotate. How does it run? is it hard on gas and blowing black smoke out the tailpipe?

The engine itself runs well (no smoke or pinging or knocking and the engine revs well). The starter only drags after it gets warm and it turns over well when it is cold. I did notice before that after revving the engine the RPM's drop to about 200 and it acts like it wants to stall but it will kick back up to about 750 idle. Could there be a problem there?

I will replace the cables and have the starter checked like Kem suggested and see if I have an improvement. I may pick up a multimeter as well so i can check my current.

Feel free to keep posting ideas and thanks for the help!

Make sure you have a good ground to the engine and body along with what everyone eles said. I would test the starter in the truck...you can get an amp tester that just raps around the (+) cable... I think .... it's been a while... also check the timing if it's to far advanced it will kick back on you when it's hot, spend a day at the drags and you will know what i mean...
