I have 186,000 miles on my trans. 99 F 250 SD. I change the fluid every 30,000 miles. Last change a new filter was installed. Oil sample sent to Blackstone. A cautionary write up was returned. Recommended change fluid at 15,000 mile interval and resample. I've done nothing to the trans except fluid and 2 filters in 3 years.

I don't know. But I do know mine has gone 155k with 30k mile changes and using regular Mercon dino fluid. No fancy fluids, just regular changes. It may go out tomorrow but right now it is pulling fine.

Mine's only been changed 3 times in 220,000 miles.

Am I a bad person now?

Better'n not at all like a lot of folks do!! Besides, you're only at about 2.5 times the prescribed interval...

My own experience would lead me to advise that $250-300 for the 6.0 transmission cooler is a way better way to spend your money than dumping $100 worth of fluid every 20-30,000 miles.

I like the sticks, so I won't say too much about the autos, but I do have a few at work. I've got a 2002 F350 auto that has around 200K on the factory tranny. I usually try and keep all the tranny fluids changed in the 40 - 50k range.

I would listen to Mark Kovalsky. He's the guy that wrote the how to flush procedure in the link provided earlier. Also you might read his signature for a little insight to his background.

How about a $120 for a Tru-Cool *AND* changing every 30k or so. Or better yet, take a sample at 30k and send it to Blackstone? Might be a decent way to solve the dilemma...

My opinion is that is an infinitely better plan than the ritualistic dumping of the oil based on what the odometer says.

Well I guess I'll add a tranny fluid swap to my list of things to do. I check my fluid regularly and it has always looked good, just never changed it.
does anyone make a remote filter for the tranny so you could change a filter w/o all the fluid.

Da Brackitt

Did your filter come with that bracket or is it part of the deep pan kit to keep it from falling off?
The bracket comes with the BD Power deep pan kit!

I added my original pan magnet to the BD Power deep pan - I modded it by drilling a hole thru the alloy post lo9cated in the bottom from side to side near the top of the post.

Once the magnet was on - put a split pin thru so it can't come up off the post and stick to any metal parts inside the tranny.

Least that way it stays in the bottom of the pan where its sposed to be to collect any metal particles!

Cheers!

Nah, no flaming from here. Your truck, take care of it how you choose. What happens at 20 or 30k (or 70k in your case) when Blackstone says to go to 15k intervals like post 16? I'm pissed because I didn't think to capture a sample for Blackstone. But then again, I had no idea how many miles were on that fluid. I personally put 20k on it, and I know the truck was well taken care of by the PO based on the grease pencil markings under the hood showing oil changes, fuel filters, etc. From the looks of the fluid I pulled out, it wasn't neglected either. To be honest, I really just wanted to get my TransGo in and I figured at least 20k was a plenty of good use out of the the fluid (no idea if it was Merc or Merc V). Now I KNOW I've got good stuff in it and when it went in. Next time, Blackstone is getting some of it...

For a little more information, in addition to the 6.0 cooler, I have the external filter with a pressure gauge, and of course a temperature gauge. My opinion (again) is that the way to make both the transmission and oil last a long time is keeping it cool. Blackstone seems to think it is working.

Oh, are you sending samples to Blackstone to confirm your long mileage?? You left that part out...

I'm on the fence about aux tranny filtering. Which one are you using? And how often do you change the filter?

Yes to the first part.

I'm running Bob's filter and pressure gauge, so I change the filter when the filter pressure gets in the red.
