If we could run it and not get fined for using it, would it be better for are motors than reg. diesel ?? More power, better lube, etc.. your thoughts..
I don't think the dyed has gone USLD yet. When I'm in NY I buy my fuel at the Indian's place of business exclusively. They have 4 pump's, 1 green diesel, and the other 3 dyed. I'm not going to say in public which one I choose to use, but the green pump is labeled USLD and the other 3 aren't. So figure it out for yourself.
No, it is not the exact same thing as heating oil. Close, and will work in a pinch but I would not use it exclusively without figuring out what kind of additives it needs to protect the injector's.
They check at different times around here. I can't use dyed because I carry a transfer tank with a pump on it. That is a flag for them to check.
I've heard scare stories that the enforcers have some kind of chemically treated swab they can rub around in your tailpipe that will tell them if you've ever used dyed.

Don't know if that's true, but I've heard it as well.
Does anyone know if the troopers in OR check peoples fuel or not? Not that I'd put farm diesel in my truck, just curious.
I've been driving a Cat motor home since 1986 and have never been checked nor have I heard of another diesel motor home being checked. But here in NC I have heard of PSD's being pulled over for no other reason than a random fuel check. So, ya never know!
Yes they do have a swab to check. They can open the fill cap and rub it with a swab and tell if you are using off road. The fine is 10,000 dollars.
With that said, after the storm Rita, all we could get was off road diesel. The goverment said it was ok for us to use it for a period of time. They gave us so many months to blend it out. But we still paid taxes for it because it was going through the fuel stations around here.
In the state of Mississippi they WILL stop trucks to check for fuel! 90% of the time big rigs only but.. they have like a long wire with a sponge on the end and they dip and then you may have sum splaynin to do..
The off-road diesel surely is the same as taxed diesel except for the dye and possibly not being the new ULSD since this is used in all sorts of diesel equipment with probably more sofisticated engines, injectors, etc. than our PSD's.
