Vibration, could in be internal???

Replaced the ujoints in the driveshaft because of this vibration. joints were in good shape but changed them anyway cause I had it out. kept the shaft in phase by marking with a punch. I put the truck up on jack stands and got it up to speed. Just as if you were driving it, it started vibrating at 56 or so and got to its worst at 64. clears up at about 68. while looking, the shaft seemed to be rotating smoothly. The tranny was rebuilt 2 weeks ago and had this problem before the rebuild also. could it be in the engine? seems if it were it would not clear up. up or down on the speed. window is the same either way????????? help.

Hey Mike. Being you had the tranny rebuilt, and changed the u-joints. Have you looked at the tires for being out of balance? I would be hard pressed to think something inside the engine is the problem. While you had the truck on jacks, did you grab the tires and check for play? There are many things that could cause this, just need to check one at a time.

I have not checked for individual wheel play in the rear but I will.
Rick,
As the truck was running at 65 miles per hour on the stands, the tires looked completely smooth in rotation. I just wonder if the guy that changed them before I did (Ujoints, could not be factory cause they were in perfect shape, no play and at 193,000 miles, they had to be replacement) got it out of phase and it still is. I marked it when I took it apart but don't mean they did. I think tomorrow, I will pull the driveshaft off the tranny yolk and run it up to speed again. That will tell me if it is from the driveshaft on back.

don't think you can get driveshaft out of phase, should be a key tooth in splines to only go one way

This truck has a two piece shaft. you can get one out of phase by splitting it in the center and putting it back 180 degrees out.

I checked that, no play. Good call though.

180 deg wouldn't make a difference all indexng is for is to align the u-join caps

I am still leaning towards the tires are not balanced. Look and see if some of your weights came off. I lost a few before. If your ball joints and hubs are tight, start looking at the front steering parts.

I eliminated the frontend when I jacked up the rear in the garage and done it from a fixed position. Really got me puzzled. The truck does not shake as a tire out of balance would do. It vibrates. I did not check the rear tires today. I get off work at one in the morning and due to a snowing, did not get home till 2:30 am. went out to dinner with the wife and drove her car to work. gonna pull the driveshaft off the tranny tomorrow and rev it up to 70.

I had the main CV joint on the rear drive shaft go bad and it vibrated in a certain speed range then would go away. I took the shaft to a driveline specialist and had them replace the front CV unit and rebalance it. It has worked great since. I also askeed about the rear bushing in my manual tranny due to the vibration I thought it may have been beat out of tolerance. That was checked and it was fine along with the rear pinion. Is the driveline shop a good reputable one?
They may have not balanced the DL correctly?

I'am curious if any body thinks that balancing the driveshaft is worthwhile or should I look elsewhere before I do that ?
