Road Trip!!

Iron Dragon,
I have made part of your trip quite a few times. The wife and I lived in St. Claire Shores for a couple years. It would take us about eight hours from Syracuse to SCS. Now that I am the umpteenth person to tell you how long of a trip it is and the weather is going to suck, Good Luck and if you get tired of pulling that thing, you can drop it off at my house. Like Penn Dick, I'm very close to I90.
Best of luck and get some pictures of that thing when you get it put on your truck.
Jeff

Hey all, just a quick note to let yal know I made the trip and I and the bed are home safe. Had dry roads and clears skys the whole trip out, but ran into snow troubles around Erie PA (thankfully short lived). I ended up with a 17hr drive yesterday (got in at 5am).

The bed is well worthe the trip and I will post more pics once I'm functional again. Oh and a bit more info, this bed was taken off of a mid 30's chebbie. Again, I'll post more shortly.

Jon

Glad you safely navigate the "Snow Belt".
It can be a real bear up on that ridge when the Lake Effect machine churns up.

How complete is the bed you have? The one I have is in nice shape, but I can tell I am missing 2 or 3 pull out drawers/trays. Kinda curious to see what the ones I am missing look like and if I'd wanna try to track down replacements. IF yous (or if anyone else has one of these beds) I'd appreciate a couple of pics of the inside.

4tl8ford, thankfully the concept of "Lake Effect" smow is one I am all too familar with having grown up on the west coast of Michigan where 12-18 inches of snow at a time isn't uncommon... I just hopped out, locked in my 4x4 on my bronco and kept on going.

Unfortunately I right now the bed is still sitting on my trailer, just couldn't get up the energy to try and get it into the garage (that SOB is build solid and weighs a ton).. but hopefully next weekend I can get it set on the truck.

Overall I feel like I stole the thing from the guy (I only paid $60 for it.. plus $400 to go get it). I think it will look right at home on my F-3 after a few minor repairs (possible stretch), a set of 52 rear fenders, and a coat of paint.. and now I have more storage spaces than I may ever know what to do with.

Talk about a small world Yeah I was getting a lot of people taking a look at the trailer as they passed me on the highway, never would have thought one of them would be a fellow FTE'r... and yes I remember Erie all too well.. was about then I had to lock in my 4wd, I'm just glad I had my Bronco and not a 2wd truck.. gotta love lake effect snow storms.

Jon,

I still say don't stretch the box, take a piece out of the frame, you know around 22"

Good to see you had a safe trip, can't wait to see what you're going to do the box.

Funny Bob, very funny... if I was gunna stick with it being a short bed, I'd be better off trying to track down a fresh frame.

I don't think that making it longer will be too bad though, its all solid sheetmetal (think around 16 ga) with solid reinforcement.. all easily weldable stuff, but I'll know more once I can get it up on a dolly or on the truck to get a better look over it.

Here are a couple more pics that I took after I got home, I'm astounded at how much drawer space there is. The only issue I had getting it home was when we were loading it up, one of the attachment points ripped out (box was frozen to the ground) and tore a 2 inch hole, thankfully this is some pretty heavy sheetmetal, so it should be a cinch to patch. I'm hoping to get more and better pics once I get back out to the garage this next weekend and can get the bed on the truck.

Heck Jon, you could convert some of that space to sleeping space so you have a place to stay on your truck trips.
