there is a bunch of them, there is a couple of chapters in this neck of the woods (dont ask me the names, I don't remember) I read about the naming and numbering scheme they used, humorous, it sounds like something I would do if I was clever enough to think about it.

Around here we have Growlersberg #86, and James Marshall #49. I never realized how many of these guys were around till I asked WTF is this E Clampus Vitus I keep seeing on everybodys rigs?

They're California historians. Among other things, they place markers where historical events took place.

The California Historical Society is rather slow when it comes to placing historical markers, and the Board of Directors is full of the usual bureaucrats.
Lots of talk, little gets done.

I remember something about the group now - I think they were looking for funds to rebuild Mark Twain's cabin a few years ago. I know the trail their website talks about - from Oakhurst to the Needles. Several dead mining towns along that trail for those who wanted to visit some ghost towns.

But the park service owns most of it - horse only, or walking. Would make a great jeep trail -- better than the Rubicon - - plus be a shortcut to Nevada from Central California. But no chance the park service would let you on it, even with Thumper.

A few years ago,the local chapter gave a proper burial to the remains of a kindred spirit whose skeleton was discovered down a ravine along the San Lorenzo River, with an old whiskey bottle from a hundred or so years ago. They figure he was walking home inebriated in the dark from Santa Cruz to the small logging town of Felton, took a tumble, and there he remained till his discovery by some hikers, and his proper service.I'm sure the Clampers shed a tear, then afterwards celebrated in style.Steve,

I thought E Clampus Vitus was a tennis player, at first.

Never mind. That was Vitus Gerulaitis.

If they are Californian historians, than they should receive some E pluribus unum to erect markers,
and build/restore what ever has to do with the history of Ca.

We are a fraternal order, and definately have some good times. However, the primary mission is historcal preservation. We also give vaious scholarships and gifts to deserving organizations.

Around the mother lode and over into Nevada, it is not hard to find historical markers and restoration projects that were funded by Clampers. While the states can't seem to find money to preserve local history, we feel it is very important for furture generations.

I think one of the classic plaques that I know of was placed by Platrix Chapter #2 and Floating Whang Chapter #8 on 3 Oct 1997. The bronze plaque was to mark the mid-point of the San Pedro and Santa Catalina Railroad Bridge and was dedicated @ 33deg 31' 30" N, 118deg 16' 45" W. Halfway between Catalina Island and San Pedro. The bridge was dismantled in 1921 - but that didn't stop these determined clampers. The plaque is there - you just need to swim to the bottom of the channel to read it.

I've seen their plaques all over California and Nevada. I would say that in addition to doing commendable and important work, these guys really know how to have a good time.

You definately need a sponsor!...Once in, you are a member of a brotherhood that spans all chapters. Norcal is the core of ECV, but chapters are expanding throughout the west.

The best way to get a sponsor is to ask a 'Redshirt' or anyone that may have an ECV sticker. If you would like to do more research for a chapter in your area, here is a link http://www.ecvgazette.com/

You can also PM me for more info if you would like.
