02.... 4x4... longbed... 150k... auto... so my tires are aired up... 6637.. 4 inch turbo back... edge on econnomy setting and fixed up pipes... about 900 bones later and im still getting ****ty milage 11.5 mpg.... most of the time its kept under 2k and is driven 70 on highway and 30 town... this sux... we dont use winter blend... wtf!!! im sick and tired of this... this is not the reason i bought a diesel ''crappy milage'' i had a 5.4 before..and needed better milage.... also the drain tube from the fuel bowl leaks.... i put a bottle under it to see if thats the only spot its leaking...it still leaks.... leaking from back of the motor on the passenger side... dripping off starter????
If fixing the fuel bowl drain doesn't stop the leak then check, the fuel return line that runs from the water seperator thru the engine valley, to the back side of the head on the passenger side. There is a clamp that holds this line and often the coating has rubbed off and worn a hole in the lone, also the fitting on the back of the head can work it self loose and either way you can loose fuel, fix it and you'll see mileage go up, don't fix it and it will strand you on the side of the road with a huge fuel spill to try and clean up. Get rid of the buckets and fix the leak first. Diesel does burn and you're leaking on hot exhaust pipes, plus coating everybodys paint jobs and windshields as you go down the road getting crappy fuel mileage.
Get all of your leaks fixed then take a several hundred mile trip, no heavy foot at all and stay at 1750-1800 rpm and then do a hand calculated mpg check. Take the extra 10 minutes to make sure it is completely full before and after.
Mark brings up a good point -- is this hand calculated? I just got 15.5, the tank before I got 18.25 driving like described above. Honestly, I wish I could drive like I wanted and still get 18.25, but I can't. I like to play, so I pay (at the rate of ~3 MPG).
My 02 4X4 crew cab get between 15 and 15.5mpg around town and 19 on long trips. I've done the 6637 filter and recently installed a 4" turbo back exhaust. Haven't checked the mileage since installing the exhaust. I bet when you get the leaks fixed, you will notice a big increase in your mileage. Diving into the "valley of he!!" to fix them is no fun, but the more you get in there, the easier it is. Let us know what you find.

Exactly, even with the few little simple mods I've done, my truck is a lot of fun to womp on, but I just can't afford to do it. If I could I would and would not complain about it because I'd know exactly why I was getting crappy MPG.
One thing that always helps my milage is keeping the windows up . That way I'm not romping on it just to hear it .
I'd say the cool sound is my weakness too. I live in RV parks so I'm around different stock PSD owners almost on a daily basis. Nearly each and every one wants to know what I've done to make mine sound so much healthier than theirs. Is that an EGO thing?

Another place to loose mpg is from leaking rubber IC boots. Have you checked all 6 boots. This is a common place to loose boost. Just another place to check.
Good luck with the leaks, I also fixed a couple leaks on my truck. PITA to say the least, but they can be found and repaired.
Definately fix the fual leak! Who knows how much you are losing there...
Another simple thing that helped my mileage was the Zoodad mod. But also when I did it, I found the the rubber shield in that area was partially blocking my intake opening! To check that out, pop the hood and raise the rubber cover in front of the radiator on the driver's side and look at the intake opening. Found the same issue on my neighbor's '05 as well. Just tuck it out of the way or cut it off.
What size tires are you running also. If they are larger than stock, you will see an apparent drop in mileage because the truck is actually traveling a good bit further than what your odometer reads.
