Can anyone help?

I posted the following on the personal announcements and new user page, maybe this is a better place for my question.

"<TABLE><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top width="100%">I have been a member of this forum for some time but this is my first post. I have a 2000 SD Power Stroke 4x4 with the electronic switch on the dash. Yesterday afternoon I needed to shift into 4WD and if failed me. The truck has the automatic transmission. I was out at our gun club and was driving up an incline that had 6" of snow. As I realized that I might need 4Hi I switched the control on the dash to 4Hi and I proceeded to get stuck. My friend who was with me nuged me out with his Suburban, The embarassment of it was unbearable. Anyway, he told me that he did not see my front wheels turning as he was backing up.

Later on after I got home I took the truck around the block and set it in 4 Hi but did not get the telltale feel in the steering wheel that I was in 4WD, however, the dash indicator for 4X4 was light.

Is there an easy fix?"

it sounds like your shift motor is bad.
it is a common problem with the electric shift 4X4.

Either the actuator at the t-vase did not engage the case, or the auto hubs failed, like they always do. Try manually engaging the front hubs, and engage 4-hi, or low and try again, the front wheels should work now. You did mention that the indicator in the dash was on. Chances are that the problem is simply in one hub. Isolate the problem hub, find the vacuum leak, and fix it, or use your existing hubs like manual ones. The best alternative, would be to replace them with a manual set of aftermarket ones. This will keep the embarasment to a minimum at the gun club in the future. Sorry you had to go through that.

75F350,

Thanks so much for the advise. I will check it out. When I ordered the truck I was talked into the automatic hubs and the shift on the fly acutator. My previous 78, 79, 84 and 97s all were manual transfer cases and hubs. It never fails, when you need them they fail. Thanks again.
