I have a 8.0 with a locker,28 spline,4 :11 gear being turned by a 351C,FMX auto,3000 stall converter with a dyno run of 338hp at the wheels. The rear is origional as are the axles. The whole package is 1972 except for the Aburn locker and bearings recently added. Will this rear stay together .The vehicle weighs 4180lbs is mostly weekend street driven with some 1/8 mile runs. All along I thought it was a 9 inch.

Is your 1972 a car or an F100?
If an F100, you have a Ford 9 inch rear end.
The 8 inch rear end was only used in cars like Mustangs, Fairlanes, Falcons.
How did you determine it was an 8? I thought these came with 9s.
With that ratio it may last a while, but they are pretty weak compared to a 9 so I'd be looking for another housing etc if you're going to use all that power.
I broke a hi mile 2.79 with a 289 and axle hop. The 3.0 replacement was flogged off and on for years without a problem. This was a 2900 lb Mustang a 289 though...
What concerns me is the stress on it due to no more one wheel spinning. With two wheels gripping and pulling hard on the pavement I hope it holds up.In todays world 400hp isnt really that much any more, but its twice what the orgional engine was putin to it.
You are asking for the cats *** trophy with 400 horse in front of an 8" in a portly unit like your Gran Torino.
Start looking for a car with a 9 inch. Since it was installed in many cars from the factory, you should have no trouble finding one.
Do you have traction bars? You must eliminate axle windup as that will hasten the day you call AAA for a tow home.
If you clean out the ring, as I did, it won't even roll. At least not until the case breaks and lets the pinion move aside as the chunks pass between it and the piece of scrap formerly known as your ring gear.
I guess I will run it till it breaks.Thats going to be more than I can fork out right now.I will start looking for a 9 inch housing.I already have 2 extra 9 inch 3rd members but they are opens with the wrong gearing. Will need to get some new axles also, ring and pinion, locker etc.
