I just recently bought a 2003 f150 5.4L with 93,000 miles. Truck runs great but seems to be lacking alot on power. It now has 101,000 miles. So i had flowmasters put on, and sounded good but quiet. Next to the same truck with same motor with same exhuast, my truck was alot quieter. So i decided to cut the system off after i got rear ended and collasped the tail pipes to almost closed. When i cut it off, i was expecting to hear a loud rumble, deep exhaust, insted, i got a low rumble that seems to come from a 6cyl. I suspect the cats maybe clogged. Also, when the truck first starts up, on a 70 degree day, it sounds good, but after the truck gets a little warm, the sound of the nice exhaust is completely diminished. Like the cats are getting warm and blocking airflow. I know theres a way to test backpressure. Any advice, ways to check the pressure, ect. Something to help, cause i really suspect the cats are clogged. Thanks
dont know if youve already done this, but get a rubber hammer and tap on the cat. sometimes if they are clogged then they will rattle internally letting you know the interior has fell apart and is clogging the exhaust. also, pull out a downstream o2 sensor and see if you can see any cat material that has been caked onto the tip of the o2 sensor.
