Which muffler?

Hey guys. I took my muffler off my truck and ran a y-pipe dual (2.25) with glasspacks. It sounds OK but it's not exactly loud enough / right quality I'm looking for. Would putting a Flowmaster on give me a good sound? I should mention my motor is a 300 I6. I heard the Flowmaster 44 is really deep.

Which muffler type should I look into? I want something that's loudish but sounds good. I understand I'm never going to get a V8 sound out of a I6, but I do want more sound and better quality than I'm getting now.

Thanks in advance. I'm not happy with what I have so I though maybe a flowmaster muffler would give me more of what I want.

I just got my truck back from the exhaust guy today,I put 2.5" with a bottle type muffler,"Red Devil",sounds pretty good.I was thinking of putting on the Flow Master 44 originally, but my guy talked me into this one.I have the 300 I6 as well.

I forgot to mention-I have single exhaust.

What does it sound like? Does it have that tractor sound, or is it bubbly? If I had to I could remove the Y pipe so that isn't a problem. Is the muffler you got the equal of the flowmaster 44? Any chance you or anybody else here has heard a 300 with a flowmaster 44?

I need some direction here, I don't know my butt from my elbow when it comes to exhaust.

I think it sound's pretty good.I need to get used to it.I also need to get my carb tuned properly, smooth the engine out a bit.
qoute-"does it have that tractor sound,or is it bubbly?"
I would have to say it has that tractor sound.Definately not bubbly.
The main reason i went with this type is because it's super strong, and was able to be mounted up high. It's going to be tough to rip it off in the bush.

There is an active thread on the flowmaster vs. magnaflow muffler's,in the 300 I6 forum. It's pretty good.

I have people asking us to put flowmasters on every kind and make of 6 cyl out there and I think they sound terrible. They just sound like a 6 cyl that needs a muffler, you do not get the flowmaster tone that you get with a 8 cyl. I try to talk people out of the flowmaster and into a magnaflow if they have a 6 cyl. This is just my opinion though, you may like the sound of a 6 cyl that needs a muffler.

I have found the opposite to be true. I have a 4.0L V6 and a Fullblown 50 series and it sounds great, while my dad's 3.0L V6 sounds like a ricer with the Magnaflow on it. I haven't tried a V6 with a classic Flowmaster 40 series. The 40 series is just too loud for me.

Bear River,
I find the opposite to be true, my neighbor with his 302 installed Flowmaster and it sounds like a ricer, me on my 460 installed Magna Flow and it sounds awsome, now
my brother inlaw put Cherry Bombs on his 5.4 and im jealious, beats those Flows hands down.

While good sound is entirely subjective, MOST people find that Flowcrap mufflers dont sound very good on anything but V8s. I wont even agree with that.

I have installed several for friends on V6 and I4 cars and trucks and they sounded so bad they could have been used to torture war criminals. Most came back within a week with a different muffler to install.

Flomaster

I have a "92, 302 with a single in and dual out with a side exit just ahead of the tire, (1) 2-1/2" in and (2) 2" out. The tail pipes are about 3-1/2' in length and it sounds real nice and mellow. I don't remember which series but it indicated a deep mellow tone. True to form I have to say. However my fuel milage dropped about 2 mpg, not enough back pressure i think but it sure sounds sweet.

I am very happy with my Flowtech Raptor on my 300 I6. Very nice sound, but probably not as loud as many FTE folks would like.

oh, the tech at Flowtech said it might last a couple years. It's a $25 muffler, so can't expect long life like the SS OEM stuff. Still, easy to slap another on and it you want to try something different you haven't sunk much money. Of course I live where salt is all over the roads for about 5 months a year.
