last week I was working on my '84 6.9. It wasn't starting so I tested the glow plugs (7 / 8 were dead) so I replaced those and it fired right up.
However, to get at 2 of them I undid the clamps on the fuel lines to get a socket and extension on. When I put everything back together 2 injectors leaked like a sieve. I have tried replacing o-rings, the plastic 'hat' that covers them, the rubber fuel lines and clamps to those injectors.
It is hard to tell exactly where the leaks originate because a lot of fuel comes out at once.
I'm wondering if unseating the old connection between the fuel line and injector is the problem.
Is there any product like teflon tape (for plumbing) that can be applied to the threads to seal that connection ?
Any other ideas ?
yes, by clamps I meant the ones that bunch the lines together. I didn't remove the injector lines until after I started the truck and saw the leaks. The two were then removed to replace o-rings. I guess the rubber ones must be the return lines. I replaced those on both sides of the leaky injector, along with the o-ring cover (hat ?)
Did you use worm-drive clamps on the return lines, or the "cheezy" ones that came with the kit? My experience is that worm-drive clamps that small aren't round enough to work. The ones in the kit really do work.
'had a few minutes today, so went out and tried some generic o-rings I picked up. Of the 2 leakers, one is now good. I think it probably needs an entire O-ring, return line kit. It has old lines on it and I noticed there are now a few other 'weepers'.
Appears to be the old story with old stuff, fix one thing and mess up something else. I guess those old return lines were self sealing at this point, before being disturbed.
Anyhow, I was going to change the rear end, front fenders and some little things and sell it as a driver. I think now I'll just save time and part it out. It is a good runner.
The leaks are all at the injectors, on top and around the return line area. It is either coming from the return lines / o-rings or where the steel fuel lines screw on to the injector. The return lines are very old. They may have been 'self sealed' with grease, etc. until I disturbed them. ??
The rubber O rings under the tees get to hard to reseal if they are disturbed.
It don't take that much hot fuel through the return line before new O rings will not reseal.
I have a few things I always advise about return lines,
If you disturb the return lines, replace the O rings if they are more than a week old.
If the are old, cracked or painted grey, replace them all, the cost is small and the amount of trouble they can give you will drive you nuts.
