1998 Expedtion Transmission Problem
Hi Everyone. When I accelerate from a complete stop I get this whining noise coming from what I think is the transfer case or transmission. It only does it when taking off and not always. It usually happens after traveling for a long time 1hr or more. I just went to Vegas and once I got off the frwy I made a stop at the light and when I accelerated it made this whining/shuddering noise, as if the tranny was slipping. I had the transmission checked and serviced and the mechanic said the tranny was fine. Any idea what is going on? Any help will be greatly appreciated

Sounds like either you're low speed clutch is failing, or the trans is over-heating, or both. Pull the dipstick to the trans and smell the fluid and see if it smells burnt. That's where I would start.

I am going to start by changing the transmission oil and will do the transfer case too. However, I took it to a shop to get a quote and they told me that my 1998 5.4L Expedition has 2 tranfer cases. Is that true?
