My '69 F100 just developed a whine from somewhere around the tranny. The closest sound that it resembles is the whine you get from trying to turn farther than the power steering allows. I don't know what tranny is in it, but it's a 3 speed automatic hooked up to a 289. It makes the most noise in Park or Neutral and when I put it in Drive I can hear it up to about 10mph. When I accelerate in any gear I can hear the whine increase with the engine speed up to a certain point. Fluid level is just fine and it makes the noise Hot or Cold.
Boy do I feel dumb...turns out it wasn't the tranny at all. I started hunting around with a dowel to pinpoint the sound and found that it's coming from the alternator. I took the belt off and whaddya know, no more whining. Spinning the rotor by hand I notice that it's not straight, so it's probably a bearing or something in there. Are alternators repairable...or rather...is it worth it to try and repair...or should I just buy a new one when this one quits?
The good news (besides not having to work on the tranny) is that I discovered the tranny I have is a C6. Which means when I build up my old 390 and take out the current 289, I shouldn't have to worry about blowing up the transmission! ...it'll probably be the rearend instead....
