Has anyone ever replaced a heater core in a 1996 explorer? It doesn't look like a very fun-n-easy job. Anyone have any possible shortcuts, or know of a thread where you would get step by step instructions? Any help would be appreciated.
We did the dirty deed last weekend. It was not a fun job, and autozone instructions were a bit misleading. Anyone doing this task in the future......Behind the blower motor housing, under the hood, there are 5 nuts that are somewhat conceled. There is only 1 nut holding the heater air plenum in place inside the vehicle. It is easy access one, on the right side underneath the dash. We were able to change the heater core without completely removing the dash assembly. The steering column needs to be lowered, but the steering wheel itself does not need to be completely removed. All of the dash bolts need to be removed, and thre will be enough room to access the heater core once the plenum is moved back about 6 inches. This is a 2 person task, with one person pulling the right side of the dash in a rearward position, while the other person changes the heater core. The complete job took myself and a friend about 5 hrs and a 12 pack of beer. We wasted about 1 hr hunting for nuts holding the plenum from the interior, which didn't exist. All-in-all it wasn't too bad, I'm guessing now that I have did the job once, it would take about 3-4 hrs to do it again. Hope this info hepls someone in the future.
