well, i noticed the truck was cranking really slowly for some reason, but i replace these batteries in july with new duralast 850 CCA batteries...both were replaced. i went to start tonight and it cranked really slow then finally started clicked the relays. the lights seemed pretty bright though until i cranked it and they dimmed way down.... i noticed that if i turned the light and radio on that the radio cut out when i turned the brights on so i assume the batteries are bad not the starter...but why were the lights bright??
possibly related, i was idling while filling up and the truck started to develop a miss, so i drove it hard and it went away, it sounded 'chunky' like a single shot powerstroke....dont know if its related.....any help is greatly appreciated...
first thing i'd do would be to check all the connections for corriosion and that they're all tight. a good battery will read 12 or more volts while the truck is off without anything turned on. running it should read 14+. how old is the starter? also, where do you live and whats the weather been like lately? cold weather makes starting these engines much harder.
Yeah you could have bad cables or a corroded connection somewhere. But that wouldn't cause your truck to surge or develop a miss, that's something entirely different. Have you taken your truck in for the CPS recall yet?
You should check you alt. before it cost you another set of batteries. If PCM is not getting enough power via batteries or alt., you could have more than just a miss. It will kill the engine.
if the batteries are bad take them back to auto zone and have them replaced they shouldn't have crapped out this soon
i see pallets of warranty batteries all the time they do go bad even if there new

I agree, I had the same problem and ended up being the alternator, check and see if you have 14+ volts when truck is running.
The parts stores should have a load tester combination alt. tester they can check without removing from truck.I have always had better luck with genuine motocraft batteries.
duralast and motorcraft are both made by Johnson Controls the only difference is any oem batteries i.e motorcraft/ Ac delco are made in ohio and everything else is whatever battery plant is closest to the store
i don't know for sure but oem batteries may be made more like interstate with more lead plates and a different solution of acid
I think his problem is the alt. and not the 6 month old batteries. Now if he continues to drain ever amp of juice out of the batteries, he will be needing new ones shortly.
it probably is but i'm bringing up the point that 6 month old batteries do crap even year old batteries crap i've replaced three exide batteries already in 2007 semis that weren't even a year old yet
I can't help you out on the miss, however, I do know a couple of things about the batteries. The earlier reply was correct. A fully charged battery would be close to 13 volts fully charged and no load. The alternator should be charging the battery in the 14 to 18 volt range. The loss of cranking power could be a parasitic load. Something that drains the battery when the truck is not running. An ammeter will help you determine if there is a load that is causing you a problem. The clock and processors will not draw more than 230ma. If you see something higher, you have an issue. Now, if that load is in a signal path that you need during operation, it could be related to the miss. The combustion control all starts with low voltage signal. Good Luck

Oh yeah, I know that batteries come from the factory bad. The reason I am leaning towards the Alt. is the fact that it don't want to run good when idling. Low RPMs, weak batteries and a weak charging system will shut down the PCM along with other vital electronics.
