hey thanks all for the great replies...well, it was a combination of both if you could say that. One of the batteries had a bad cell or something, it was reading about 8 volts, whereas the other was reading a bit under 12. The guy at the store didn't know how to use the alt. tester and was revving it bouncing it off the rev limiter...don't think thats how you test it. anyway, couldn't get anything from the alternator, completely dead. The motor stumbled a bit when it came back down to idle... looks like it is time for one new batt and a new alternator. I'm going to try and get a motorcraft one...Thanks again for the great replies!
that's correct and i believe the regulator is built into those alts. somebody correct me if i'm wrong. i did not replace a regulator when i replaced my alt. good luck
You might want to see what an alternator would cost from Mean Green. I have one and believe them to have better bearings and a tremendous boost in current
Yes, the regulator is built into the alternator, it's all one unit. Be sure that both of your batteries are fully charged (and tested)before you install the new alternator that way everything is good to go! Also, look at the surpentine belt if it looks worn replace it. Good Luck!!
Make sure you load test both batteries and not just read voltage. A bad alt. will suck the life out of the best batteries. They should be under free replacement warr. and it is their task to prove to you they are both good.
In dual battery installations, it is best to have two of the same batteries. You may want to consider selling the good battery to a friend and get two that are identical. Sam's Club has great pricing. Most batteries are manufactured by Johnson Controls and brand labled. One other thought, the positive connection and negitive connections should be on different batteries. That helps to balence the current profile.

Sam's club batteries would be the same as wal mart batteries which are junk
