How Do The Idi Injectors Work?

noob question here, lol, How do they work? i know they have a precombustion chamber but where and how is it injected? i have a stock turbo diesel, does it have the same idi injectors as the older diesels without a turbo, i know its not direct injection, because that would make it a power stroke.

That is a loaded question. I will give you long/short version.

There are three basic cyl. designs. Direct Injection, Precombustion chamber and Turbulance chamber. We actually have Turbulance chambers on these engines.

A Precombustion chamber only gets about 30 % of the compressed air. Wakasha's, old Cats ect. A turbulanced chamber motor gets about 95% of the air compressed into it. We have flat top pistons in our motors on this forum. A precombustion engine had a combustion chamber in the piston like direct injection ones do.

As far as injectors and nozzles go. It is like this. An injector creates the injection pressure inside of itself other name is a Unit Injector. Power Strokes Ect. Some inject the fuel by means of oil pressure and some were injected by the force of a push tube or rocker from the camshaft. These motors have a common fuel galley in the heads with relatively low fuel pressure. Anywhere from 50 to 150. Most of these engine will fall into this range. Some have a pretty high volumn though.

Nozzles on the other hand are as the name implies. They are just nozzles and they nothing but spray. The injection pressure is created in an injection pump like our engines. There are a couple different ways it is done and metered.

The system that is being used by some now is a common rail system. They have a pump that pumps high pressure fuel through a common rail and the nozzles are tied into that rail.

There are different configurations of these fuel systems around and combinations of more then one system.

Turbulance chamber engines are quiet but they needs glowplugs to start.

1994. Google some of the terms. You probably will find some good info on the them. It really doesn't matter what we call the stuff on this forum. We all know what each other is talking about. We aren't going on Jeopardy.

It never hurts to learn. Nobody knows everything and they never will. Nobody lives that long.
