I have a 2001 F250 w/3.73 gears. Owners manual says 11000 lbs max pulling a fifth wheel. With the 4.3s, 14000lbs. I talked to someone who says that I could pull nearly as much as the 4.3s just by using a Superchips controller or other compareable brand. He works at a camper dealer and says he has alot of experience doing this. Claims that power is the real factor behind the difference in towing weights.
Does anybody have any experience doing this? I would like to buy a larger fifth wheel toy hauler but I don't want to endanger myself or anyone else.
This person does not know I am in the market for a new trailer. Just a fluke conversation.
I don't know of any product on the market that claims to raise your GCWR, but I could be wrong.
.
There is nothing you can do to change the GCWR of the truck. The CVWR and the GCWR are what the manufacturer stamps on the vehicle, period. If you pull or haul heavier than that then you are by definition overloading the vehicle.

I understand what you are saying. Other than the gearing, is there any other difference between my truck and one with 4.3 gears? If not, then the trailering capacity should be the same. Just that the engine and drivetrain would be under more strain with the 3.73s.
And yes I also understand that the rating plate is what the authorities would be looking at.
