Last summer I put new rotors and repacked wheel bearings on my 95 F-150. About 150 miles later I had a very loud squeal at about 25 mph coming from the drivers side wheel. Turns out it was a wheel seal; I pulled it back apart and lubed the seal even more (yes I had lubed them before). This took care of the problem. Now, 9000 miles later, I'm hearing it again, though not near as loud.
95(?)-96 F-150 4x4's are slightly different than the older ones as there's an extra seal on the outside of the spindle, plus the normal wheel seal in the hub. This extra one is what's making the noise. I guess I'll pull the passenger side off and re-lube it and see if that fixes it.
Just kind of curious if anybody else has had this happen. The seals are all Motorcraft (actually cheaper than the parts stores!); so it's not a low quality seal issue.
. . . . YES, indeed i did have this dang SQUEAL from having those same secondary axle seal's just before the inner_hub_wheel bearing_seal ; and yes, i did also lube them but they eventually dried out and began to SQUEAL again, ONLY Louder then previously..... .......my FIX for this > > > > i decided to just YANK those damn secondary seal's off and just have the NEW inner wheel bearing seal's for there and NO more SQUEAL ! ! ! ! .........other than that, your gonna half to take them apart everytime they tend to "DRY_out" & SQUEAL on ya and then Re-Lube again & again & again . . . . . ..........
....{ take note of WHAT Wheel's & Tires i am NOW running, in my Sig, below; and going on a year & NO SQUEAL, Yet ! ! ! ! }
Glad to hear I'm not the only one. I've never heard another 95-96 squealing, and it's pretty embarassing driving through town. One thing I can't figure out, is I had the bearings packed and new seals not long after I got the truck. Put over 90K on it without it making a sound. Maybe it's the kind of grease I used?
.......my guess would be to use something like Tranny fluid; since you never hear a squeal er' what ever from the seal's about's the drive shaft to the tranny, huh? ! ? ! ? ! ! ! ..... ........BUT there's no way to keep tranny fluid there to keep the seal moist & cool ! ! ! [ unless someone know's of the "GREAT_Grease" to use for here for the "LUBE" purpose ? ? ? ]. . . . . i sure the heck don't know of it, soooo, my best method was to just REMOVE that PITA_Squealin' Seal from both side's..... ......Work's for me ! ! !
.....{ i do know for a fact, Dealership's state to repack/regrease wheel bearing's & seal's every 30k miles.... .......maybe that keep's the Squeal from coming out LOUD and all.....oh, well; }......
Well I finally got around to fixing it today. Jacked up the front end to find it was the same side again. Right side is still normal. Pulled the left off and put more grease than ever on that seal. If it starts squealing again I'll replace that seal and the wheel seal which it rides on. Maybe I'll do the ball joints on that side too which are just starting to get some play. Not too bad for both sides being the originals.
. . . . . .LOLOLOL. . . . . give it time, and then the other side will start squealin on ya; pull apart & regrease & put back together........then the other or even = maybe both sides will tend to squeal; THAT is WHY i chose to just remove those"cup" looking seal's and just have the Wheel Bearing Seal's ( Of being Brand NEW & Good Quality , tho ) = NO MORE SQUEAL whatsoever and i don't need to take off and regrease cuz of that such squeal...........only gotta look at 30K maintenance of repacking & adjusting front wheel bearing's.....
Where were you guys a couple months ago when I was all over this forum asking for help on this issue for my 1996. When I finally did figure it out, I just started spraying silicone spray onto the seal every day or every other day for a couple weeks. I have not done anything for a couple weeks and does not squeel so far.
