Can someone explain how the fan clutch works? I have heard people say in other posts "when the fan comes on" mine is always on. I have had other vehicels that had the fan bolted right onto the water pump without the clutch. What are the advantages of having the clutch?
The fan clutch is so the fan doesn't always run. It is suppose to engage at a pre-set temp locking it to the speed of the motor. I believe that the locking action is progressive too or in otherwords the hotter the engine the more it locks and the faster the fan moves. You definatly want to keep it, but if it is always on then its not working right. Its probebly bad or sized.
... While on this topic, about how much should the fan clutch have when moving it by hand? (looking for a non-technical measurement here..) Mine I can feel a good amount of resistance, if i spit it by hand, makes it about 1/4 turn, maybe... (when engine off obviously...) this sound about right?

From what I remember, You should be able to turn it by hand, and with a good forcefull spin by hand it should turn between a quarter and a half turn + (so YES that sounds about right), if if keeps spinning it's shot and if it won't turn it's seized - non technical enough?
