On my '87 you can shift between 2hi & 4 hi on the fly w/ the clutch pushed in.
You need to be @ a stop to select 4low
There should be a sticker on the top of your drivers side visor explaining this.
Maybe 85's were different.

If your going from 2 high into 4 high you should not have a problem or vise versa. The only time you have to put it in park is going from high 2 or 4 into 4 LOW. Someone can correct me if i am wrong, but that is what out 87 f-250 is like. Have fun!

well its in 4x4 low and I put it in park and the shifter wont go out of 4x4. and my transmission linkage is messed up and will only go in park and reverse right now and not neutral and was thinking thats why its stuck because I cant get into neutral.

well i went out there and it works now....Guess like you said the pressure on it...Oh another question...
when you drain the tranny fluid does it also drain the trans case or is it all seperate?
