I have a 98 expy, 4.6l. I now have what appears to be an oil leak problem. it appears that it is in the front.
I have read the posts about the head gasket leaks, but they have all been in the rear.
My leak is in the valley that i can see under the alternator. There is oil on the front of the alternator, slung up to the coil pack, and hood. no doubt that it is being slung around from the serpentine belt. i have sprayed it off several times and cleaned it trying to find the problem I am at a aloss in trying to find the problem There is not oil towards the rea that i can tell, do not smell anything burning off of the exhaust, just drips and small puddles under the truck and on the front of the alternator, belt, fan blades and passenger side in line with the belt.
any one have any suggestions on where to look or possible causes?
Check the crankshaft seal. If it's leaking, it can throw oil onto your belt and end up covering the front of the engine.
If it is the crankshaft seal, is that something that can be reaplaced on the car, is it the one that i have to remove the crank shaft after removing the engine? Or does anyone know of an easy what to do this while in the truck?
Be sure to check that there is not a groove worn into the surface the seal rides on on the balancer. If so you should either replace or resurface the surface. I have seen a sleeve available that you install over the damaged surface on some engines.
