ARP Headstuds

I am amidst the 6.0 Bible and cant help but think about the headgasket problems this engine has inherently displayed. Question: What is so special about the ARP (or any brand) headstuds? I mean all they are doing is holding the head to the block. How can one set do this any better than the next?

Second question: can this mod be done without replacing the headgasket? As a preventative measure? I know once you break the bolts loose the seal is broken on the original gasket, but can one be done at a time?

it is a complete b!tch to get in there to do the studs, and if you went that far, might as well replace the gaskets....they're not that expensive, esp if you get them on ebay. no sense in doing all that work only to find out that the gaskets were damaged while installing studs. the OEM bolts stretch over time, which is why the gaskets blow. the studs do no stretch, which is why ppl recommend them

The head gaskets should be replaced when Head Studs are added. You're in there anyway so it would be silly not to do so.

ARP Studs have been proven on many 6.0 applications, including mine. The TTY bolts failed miserably in this test so why question what works? As long as you've gone that far into the 6.0 don't scrimp by leaving the original head gaskets.

Do it right, do it once. Do it once, do it right.

Point taken. I have what I think to be a moderate-thorough understanding of mechanics and was just wondering what would cause any one stud to be better than another in this application. Everything I can read and assess says that the studs are a Helluva job, so unless I'm otherwise persuaded, I'm not going to do them until she blows. Which I'm not running extra anything on mine right now so she doesnt, but I want to start playing with the power and this is direct result of doing so. Thanks for the insight.

Please remember, it's better to have built the engine strong and have no problems, than to have tried mods that caused problems and scrambled to fix those afterwards.

Install studs and updated 06 head gaskets first, then start playin the horspower/torque games! You will love the results!

What about the "powertrain" warranty. Will the studs affect it?

The main thing to avoid is a failure that results in hydro-locking your engine. Do the head studs and the EGR / EGR Cooler delete early and then don't worry about it (if you have the cash).

I agree.

I haven't posted much here for a while, but I have played with the power in mine. FYI- Mine is an '06 and currently has an '04 engine in it. I played a bit to hard and she came apart. Listen to Kepler4.

Possibly.... that depends on who installs them. Mine were installed by Ford Technicians when they changed out the blown head gaskets. I provided the studs and compensated the Technician for installing them.

If something should happen to the engine and it involved removing the heads, then I would definitely take it back to that same dealer and group of Diesel Techs that are now familiar with my PSD.

Nice to see you back 6L. I was starting to wonder what happened to you. Saying she came apart is a bit of an understatement.

did you pay to have the head gaskets replaced or did they do it under warranty and you only had to pay for the studs?

Added up the credit card statements and depression set in. After a bit of financial rethinking and a lecture from my banker friend, I'm back on track and cut them damned plastic cards up. Everyone does know that modding IS ADDICTIVE, right?

Nah, not really. Did you know an engine block makes a great coffee table?
