Thinking of lifting my 01 F250 SD. I currently am running the stock 235 85 16's. A buddy of mine gave me some 315 series tires off of his 05, only problem is they fit 17 inch wheels. From the research I have done 17's were not a factory option on my year of SD. Can I use 05 17's on mine, or is there is a difference in the newer styles. If not, does anybody have any idea what size tires would fit on the stock 16's, with the addition of a two inch suspension lift? Thanks in advance!
I had a fabtech hanger kit on my 2002 with 315 BFG A/Ts and 16" wheels. The fabtech kit is 2.5", but it rubbed. I am now running 315 Toyo Open Country MT's with a procomp 4" lift on the stock wheels, I have more rub than I'd like and quite a bit more than the BFGs. Changing the offset might cure most of it, so in short there is a lot to consider.
I believe the 05 had the same bolt pattern, but someone will correct me if I am wrong. The problem I think you might run into is the offset. The 05's had coils instead of leafs, so they may have less backspace.
17" rims will work. If you have the factory rims from an 05 or newer with 8 on 170mm.
The backspace will be different and you should notice that the rim will stick out a little more than the ones you have. I think they have a net 3-3.5 inch outside aspect from the hub. If you have to buy rims you will have to look at the backspace and decide how much you want to have the rims stick out from the side of your truck. This will also effect whether or not the tires rub when turned or with suspension compression. For example if you have an 9" rim with a 4" backspace you will end up with a net aspect of 5" and your tires will stick out 1.5-2" more than the factory rims. With these numbers you will notice a rub when turning. These numbers are for the 05 up rims and I do not know the exact numbers for the 04 and older rims but the principle is the same. If you use the older rims on the newer trucks you need a spacer ring to move the rim out so it will clear the coil spring. I have 35" tires on 8.5" rims with a 5" backspace and they do not rub or stick out past the fender to the point that I would need flares to keep the truck clean. With a 2 " lift you should be able to clear 35" tires with out rubbing issues as long as the backspace is right and you are not running hard off road conditions. The rim size and offset is more dependant on Caliper clearence and bigger is rarely a problem.
