Toploader 4 speed

I was at a swap meet today and bought a toploader to put into my 63 unibody with a 331. The guy I bought it from told me that it came out of a 1964 galaxie and was bolted up to a 390. I found a decoder online and it told me that it came from a 289 Fairlane or Meteor. Other people I have talked to have told me that to use a toplaoder, Ineed one out of a full size Ford (such as a galaxie like a was wrongly informed) inorder to keep the shifter from being under the seat. Does any one know if this tranny will work. There is alot more numbers on the transmission that I cant find an decoder for, if anyone could help me with the rest of them I would greatly appreciate it.

Data tag - HEH B 011597

Tail Shaft - C4OH-7A040

Main Case - C4AR-7006-A

Thanks again.

toploader help

go to google, and google davidkey toploaders... I think his website is www.4speedtoploaders.com... he has a lot of ID charts for toploaders. I have 3 cars with toploaders in them and have always found what I needed at his website. he has id charts for the tranny id and the tailhousing ids.

You bell is what has to fit the engine, what's a 331 anyways?

What were you able to score it for?

331, prolly a typo, but both the early Cadillacs and Chryslers had 331 V8's. The Chryslers 331 was a hemi, the first one, introduced 1951.

I just loaned out my 1960/64 car parts catalog, so I can't look up HEH-B...but if the tailshaft is marked C4OR (not H...that's incorrect), it's from a 289.

If the tailshaft is marked C4AR 7A040-A it's from a Galaxie: 1964/67 with a 390 engine.

If the tailshaft is marked C4DR 7A040-A, it's from a 1964/65 Falcon 260/289.

The C4AR case was used from model year 1964 thru 7/1/1971 for all Galaxies, Fairlanes, Mustangs, regardless of the engine size, and 1964/65 260/289 Falcons.

1964: First model year for the Ford 4 speed top loader.

The above info is from the 1965/72 Ford car parts catalog, but the HEH-B code isn't listed there, so it was used prior to 1965.

Call Green Sales for assistance on Monday (8-5 EST) = 800-543-4959, and give them that HEH-B reference.

main case ID number.....

on the main case ID number, I believe that is just the ford part number for the main case, it is not car or truck spefic id number, it's like the ford part number.

Like on my 289 blocks I have, the part number is C5AE-6015E, that's the same block for all 289's whether in a car or truck, or my HIPO or my coupe... same block

in your case, C4 obviously is 1964, but used for many years after that. I would call David Kee monday and ask him to confirm that. He's a good guy, he'll help you out.

331 wasn't a typo, its a 302 stroker motor, bored .30 with a 3.25 stroke, and I picked up the tranny off an old man for $625 at the Decatur TX swap meet.

The transmission ID number (found only on a tag) is HEH-B.

The case and tailshaft numbers are Ford Engineering numbers, not part numbers.

You want the real dope, call Green Sales...the HEH-B tag number info is found ONLY in the 1960/64 Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalog...and so...is the only place your expert could have got it from.

Please call it a 30 over 302 here. Some of us don't have a clue of these made up engine sizes, but have been dealing with 30 over, 40 over, 60 over for many many years. Ford never produced a 331 so nothing fits a 331.

thanks

The Decatur meet was awesome, like always there was more chevy stuff than anything but there was also quite a few old Fords. It took my friend and I over 5 hours to walk the whole thing. The LaGrave swap meet im on the same level with you, it was pretty dissapointing, although I found a Yamaha MT50 that was complete for $50 only to find out when I got home that with a little work, collectors are paying in the $1000 for them.

I would like to buy this transmission

Hi Pavlaker. This toploader you have is exactly the one I have been looking for, with just the right part numbers. Would you please consider selling it to me? Please let me know. Thanks a lot.

Hey ford 289.
What are you planning to put the toploader in? Is it a 61 to 63? What engine do you have?

I picked up a HEH BY which should be a WR but is really a CR.
It has main CN C5AR-7006 D and tail CN C60R-7A040.
I was planning on putting in my 62 M100 unibody.
