I'm going to take in my '59 F250 to get rid of the 4.56:1 gearing. The shop is Santa Clara Truck Wreckers, and they have a good reputation, but I've not known anyone who has actually had work done there. Their price was certainly the best, and they do a lot of changes,as opposed to shops that only do an occasional one.Does anyone have any input?
New axle bearings, all new seals, new gear set,for $900.00.That's about 4-500.00 less than other transmission places that only occasionally do differentials, while they,on the other hand specialize in them.Steve
I considered it but am not interested in located, pulling, transporting, changing, and disposing of the extra one.Plus, the location of the shock mounts is different on the newer ones and would need welding.So,$900.00 seems like a bargain to me.
See now, if you were closer to me, all your troubles could go away, we'd just fix up the new one, weld things up, and toss the old one in the pile out back
What a difference!Got it changed to 3.54 gears, and the lower rpm's-by more than a thousand @60 mph,I'd guess-means far less noise @ highway speeds, noticeably less fuel consumption, ,and no feeling of really pushing it to go over 65.Still plenty of low end torque, though now I really need to start out in the previously unused 1st gear.I only stay there briefly before up-shifting.On our steep, winding mountain roads,I don't make it into 4th as often now. It's like chronic pain-you don't realize how bad you had it till you feel good again.I consider that some of the best money I've spent on my truck.
