I have 1978 f150 4x4. It starts right up at first. But after i drive it for awhile it will not start back up its turning over slow but will crank. It has a new battery new starter and a new coil. What can be the problem? Also has a oil leak i think iol may be getting in the starter. the leak maybe from the oil pan or rear seal. the engine is a 429. 4 speed trans whith granny gear. please help if you can
You might have 2 different issues going on. Starting with the slow cranking. How are your battery cables and connections? Are you getting full voltage through the starter relay? Where is your timing set at?
When it doesn't start, are you getting fuel and spark? After it cools off a while, will it restart easily? Do you still have Duraspark ignition?
Check the wires going to the starter, look for corrosion, missing insulation, broken stands of wires. Double check the ground wire going to the block as well. Three things come to mind when I hear about these problems. Bad wires, advanced timing, overly hot starter. If its in your budget, upgrade your battery/starter wires to 2/0 (double aught.) A heat shield for the starter will help too. If your distributor/ignition is acting up, I dunno what to tell you there. (I have seen this problem fixed with a new distributor...)
