Flatbed w/ Boom help needed.
I'm buying my first truck today.
I was wondering if anyone has a flatbed w/ a boom or cherry picker. I am trying something homemade and any suggestions would be great.
Swivel type, probably going to use a chain hoist at end of arm.
Thanks.
76' f250-- 360, 4spd.

As far as those harbor freight pickers, my old boss got one, and it was nice, but he needed to reinforce the floor quite a bit to make it useful. There is too much leverage there for just sheetmetal to hold.

when I was doing field repair service I built my own boom was on a utility bed but same idea
I used a piece of 10" well pipe for a stand and 3/4 ton rear spindle and hub for the swivel
I used two electric boat trailer winches to raise and lower boom and for hoist
the boom was gantry style and used four part cable block
I had a 20' control cord for operation
I used 3" box tube for main boom which was 8 ft with 4 ft slide in extension
It worked slick

Well, I work at Altec Industries in Elizabethtown, KY. We build the aerial units for "bucket trucks" used by all the utility companies, big and small. We are the largest manufacturer of this stuff in the world. You should check out our web site if you decide to build one. May give you some construction design ideas.
