my 97 4x4, 3.55 gears,4.6 regular cab gets 15 to 17 all stock. 206,000 mls. mobile one 5/30. premium gas its whole life. I have had to do the EGR port cleaning twice. New wires and plugs and trans/transfer fluid every 30k. Mobil 1 in both diffs.
This may sound spooky, but when you turn the key to position 2(ignition on, no start) does your check engine light illuminate. I have seen used cars with the bulb out or smashed to cover up a problem. Really poor milage may be the result of a problem that OBD should catch. Just a hunch. my $0.02 worth.
ya i would have to agree, a good tune up and clean air filter will help up the mileage, also i heard that sintehtic oil helps to, but not sure never tried it
The LAST THING I want to start is an oil thread. I keep seeing conflicting posts about 5-20 vs 5-30. My 98 calls for 5-30, have always used it. Yet I read that some claim Ford themselves changed their thinking later on and recommended 5-20. Is this 5-20---5-30 simply choice or did Ford actually post something with a recommendation? My question is asked simply for my own education and not meant to be abrasive or start a conflict.
My 97 4.6 auto 4x4 3.55 gets around 12-14 in the cooler months. Rough estimating on hwy in the winter puts me at about 18. Never on it long enough to find out. Highest i've gotten is 19.5 that was in the summer of 06. My highest since then has been about 17-18 on a long hwy trip to southern MN. This is with 213k on the truck.
