How is it possible that people on this forum and people I know are getting 17 to 19 m.p.g. in a extended cab with a 4.6, auto , 3.55 gears and factory size tires. When I have the same exact truck and cant get more than 11 mpg no matter what kind of gas or driving like bluehairs. Is there possible timing issues or something. How is this possible it makes no sense to me when I bought my truch I did my research and was thinking I should get 15 no problem.
I wouldn't expect those numbers unless it is 2wd and driven where it is flat. 11 seems a little low but before I did some mods my 5.4L only got 12.8. Honestly I just shake my head at what some people claim they get, or they got that mileage once and run with it. I've gotten 17mpg a few times on 1 route I take, other than that it is 14.6 and thats averaged over 150K miles.
Iv got a 4.6 and a 5 speed, and i get 15-16 average. If I keep it under 70, I can get 17 but thats as high as iv ever got. Check your fuel filter, air filter, dont know what year your truck is but if you have drums in the rear they could be dragging. I had that happen with my old truck, killed the mileage. 11mpg is purrty low.
I have a 2000 5.4, 4x4, stock except for an aftermarket muffler. Am honestly getting between 14-15 average with a high road mpg of 18. Towing a small 16 ft camping trailer i got 11.5, consistently. I use an egg foot at all times, so it might be better than most. You did not say how much mileage you have on ur truck. Would suggest a cleaning of the injectors if they have not been done, as well as a tune up. Jim
Every tankful has been logged on my '98, 4.6, 4X4, XLT, 3.55 SuperCab, on its original 16" tires. The MPG figures look to be stuck between 14 & 16, regardless how it seems to be driven! However I have never tried burning a tankful at a steady 55. Short runs to/thru town or cruising in the 75-80 range on I75, loaded or empty, doesn't make any difference.
IMO there must be something wrong if you "cant get more than 11 mpg". How do "bluehairs" drive in your area? Guess all the fast "bluehairs" made it to FL already.
Great thread - My truck has 150k miles and gets 12 mpg in hilly city driving (3.55, 4.6, only mod is 26575r16 tires). I was worried that my truck had lost the 16mpg that I was getting from day one. My wife recently took the truck on a long highway drive and she got 15.7 mpg for the first time in years. I agree with other posters, terrain and driving conditions have the biggest effect. I remember I got 19mpg only one time when the truck was new. I purposely drove 55mph and all flat highway driving in TX. It was the most painful tank of gas Ive ever had to burn!
I drive a 99 4x4 with a 4.6 and no mods other than a K&N air filter. My MPGs usually hover around 14-15 for everyday driving- a 50/50 mix of flat rural roads and in-town traffic. Some tanks will stretch into the 17+ MPG range if I stay out of town and scoot the seat back so my foot won't reach all the way to the floor. Is seems like the mileage was a little better when the truck was newer, but I never really kept track back then. It may have been my imagination.
this is getting to be a good thread. Thanks to all for posting my truck has 125000 on it. I was hoping to get 15. Were would some of you start. Is it possible that there could be a timing issue with the trucks that are getting such crappy milage. Ilove my truck but I had to by a ranger so i could afford to drive my F150 on the weekends.
you could afford to drive your F150 everyday if you hadn't bought that ranger. even if you got it cheap, you'd still be hard-pressed to ever see your money back in fuel savings. Plus you have the added taxes, gas, upkeep, repairs, routine maintenence costs, and so on. I'd check your fuel filter and air filter, and change you're plugs and wires if it hasn't had it done yet. also run some injector cleaner through a tank of fuel, couldn't hurt. Also make sure you're running the 5W20 oil.
by the way my '98 4x4 Scab with the 5.4 is getting around 14mpg, even with the 225,000 miles. I think this truck runs better the more miles i put on 'er!
I have a '98 with 4.2 manual. I was getting a steady 17-17.5 mpg until I had a new clutch and slave cylinder put in. Now i can only get 12-14 mpg. Can't understand it!
I got 19 on one trip in Arizona once... cruized at 70 the whole way. now I'm only getting about 13-15, but doing mostly short trips to and from work in cooler weather. Anyone know if a bigger throttle body, Mass Air Senser set up would help mileage and or power? I've already got a cat back ( no Slow Master) and a FIPKit from K&N.
I have an 01 F150 SuperCrew 5.4 4x4 stock except a K&N cold air kit with 125K-ish miles. It usually gets 14-15 mpg mix of city and highway. 17 going up north mostly freeway. But I got 20 mpg on a trip from Milwaukee WI area to Norwalk OH both ways, but that was all freeway and mostly tollway through IN &OH.
