Hi Guys
I'm new to this site. I just bought my 04 F350 CrewCab With a V10. It has a lift kit and 32" tires. My question is what can I do to get the gas mileage to go over 10mpg. It stays the same at about 9 mpg if I tow or not. Don't get me wrong I love my truck, but would like to get a bit more mileage. Also it has 4:30 gears. Any advice would be appericated.
I bought it used with 55,000 miles on it. It has an fram air hog filter. I don't know of any trans service. I have been reading that most people are changing
plugs at 50,000 miles. Is this a common change? The mileage hasn't changed
much since I bought. It seems to be the same if I'm towing or not.
Does it shift normally? Could be time for a flush.
Do you know if there were any modifications done to the engine?
32" tires are not that tall for 4.30 gearing, so I would rule that out.
Do you know someone at your local dealership? You might see if they can run a diagnostic on the engine - road test. Sometimes these engines won't show a check engine light for things that aren't quite right.
I would also change the fuel filter if you haven't yet.
I don't know if anything was done to the engine, the only thing I can see is that they put a fram airhog air filter. I have 60,000 miles on it now. Yes it is an automatic. I haven't changed the fuel filter yet. Thanks I will check to see if I can get the diagnostics done.
I will just throw this out there: If this is the first Superduty truck and first V10 you've had, it could take a little while to adjust your driving habits.
5000 miles you'd think that should be enough time to adjust, but it's not if you haven't taken into consideration the weight of the truck and the peak performance areas of the engine.
Thanks, I'll keep an eye on this. No, This is my second Super duty my last was a F250 with a 5.4. The V10 is new to me ,so i'll have to get use to it. Yes, it is heavy being a Crewcab Dually.
I have a dually and it is different. The engine of those two (5.4 & 6.8) or really different. You can burn some serious fuel towing with 2 extra tires on the ground if you don't rev the engine high enough. I never lug my engine.
Is that city or highway mileage you are quoting? While our vehicles are different (I have an Ex 4X4) I get 14 mpg on the expressway with the 4.30 gear with the cruise set at 60 mph.

That is empty on the highway. When towing my 8-9K trailer I can see a high of 10 mpg down to 8 on hilly terrain. I have seen lower through the steeper hills though. I tow with OD on and have weighed my combo at 17,300 fully loaded. Hope that helps

So I'll need to drive it more to find my way of driving it.
Does anybody have a preference on the type and brand spark plug to use in the V10. I want to change mine and was thinking of putting Bosch plugs in.I also want to change the oil and I read that synthic oil was best, but what brand is best? Any help would be appericated.

I've read numerous posts saying bosch plugs suck. I never used them and never will. When my V10 needs plugs in about 10k I'm spending the $$$ on 10 Motorcraft Single platinums. Thats what came from factory and there is no advantage to using any other kind.
I've ran Synthetic oil in my truck since day one and I like synthetics and use them pretty much exclusively. Right now I'm running Motorcraft Syn blend because I was feeling thrifty the last time I bought oil and didn't feel like spending more than double for my usual Mobil 1. For the $$$ you cannot beat the MC oil and a good ole FL-820s MC filter.
This thread peaked my interest so I drove the truck at 55 mph and got 15+mpg and at 50 mph got 16+mpg, again at 60mph I got anywhere from 14 to 15 mpg at roughly 2100 rpm's. This is wintertime about 33 F degrees half tank and just me driving. It makes me wonder how the Gear Vendor's over/underdrive will help because the mpg are sensitive to rpm's. I guess the best of both worlds for me would be a 4.30 or 4.58 for good acceleration and pulling power (possibly also using the underdrive to make the gear bigger) and stock tires but the underdrive bringing the rpm's back down at cruise.
