white smoke and running rough

Tim, That's the first I've heard of Lucas being bad for Strokes. I must have had good luck with it then because I've ran 1-2 quarts with each oil change since about 18,000 mi. Bought it new (97 4x4,long bed S/C) and she now has 287,000. Oil still doesn't show movement on the dip stick between 3,000 mi oil changes. Last addition I think I'm doing is the FPR shim this weekend. Its been the best truck I've ever owned. Stripped out the inside of the cat about 8 years ago, 3" down pipe, 4"exhaust w/stock muffler, 6637 filter, a couple of banks add-ons with 100 hp chip. Exhaust temps pulling enclosed sled trailer to northern MI at about 850 degrees, 78-82 mph.

So you said it didn't do this last winter? How much smoke are we talking? Also what do the idle sound like? Does it sound like this. This is what I consider the cold weather romps even though thats not what this truck is doing.

Depending on the amount of smoke (some in normal) you either have GP issues or low compression, a fueling issue wouldn't go away after 20 or 30 seconds unless its just the cold weather romps.

My truck starts great on the 75HP setting on my TS chip, Much better than stock. Then after the GPR shuts off I kick it up to high idle and clean snow off the windshield
...Little to no white smoke even down into the teens temperature wise. Running Stancor GPR and new GP's which helps too ![Okay!](images/smilies2/thumb.gif)

If i start in stock tune its a crop duster. In a tow tune very little smoke.
Wonder if its a split vs singles thing.
What do you have?

Well it throws that out. (split/singles).
I looked/checked every thing to find out why this cold smoke thing.
Had it down to possible inj nozzle springs. Started changing burns and stumbled on this no smoke thing. All in all it comes down to in OEM cold start its just over fueled.

just because the icp\ipr and duty cycles are in spec doesnt mean the injectors are happy on cold starts, in fact they never will be. as everyone else has stated powerstrokes and T444E's are heui systems, if the oil is cold and thick then it doesnt fire the injectors the same way it will with hot thin oil. there is nothing you can do to make it a perfect cold started engine. while the synthetic oils will help, it wount get perfect (if it does i have yet to see one) in fact i have never seen a 7.3 that didnt smoke in 15 degree weather. do you have nayway to take a video of your truck on a cold start? it would help us all see how bad your truck is acting and help us point you in other directions, or tell you that your truck is behaving normal. either way some eye to eye would be a benefit to all parties involved.

compare yout truck to mine, first off let me say this, all glow plugs are properly ohmed out, no issues. all uvc wirng is new, relay is workng properly. engine compression is great, truck runs great. after that view how my truck starts when cold.
the first video is after the truck sat untouched for 2 days right around freezing. i even waited untill well after the wait lamp went out before cranking
http://youtube.com/watch?v=3lcvzTcVBKE
this one is after only sitting 2 hours from getting home from work, its about 15 degrees out and the wind is horrible, waited only for the lamp to go out, then cranked
http://youtube.com/watch?v=wVEPWIZ_Tlg
this is running conventional 15w40, mobile delvac . i have run many different brands from castrol to shell to the mobil, all react the same to cold weather. personally i am not a fan of synthetic but i am not here to talk bad about it. i am considering running it once this winter just to see if the cold start smoke is reduced by running it. other than that i am very pleased with the mobil delvac.
