i have a 1998 expedition with 154,000 miles on it. i have a couple problems i have questions with.
the first and the most important is when it is under a load, like when i am pulling a hill or pull out to pass someone it sounds to me like it has bad piston slap or pinging then when i get out of the pedal or top the hill it goes away and sounds and runs fine??????
the second problem is it doesnt like to start very well when it is cold out. it will start just for like a split second then die, it usually does it once or twice and on a bad day three maybe four times. once it starts it seems to run rough and loud, but once it runs for a few min. and warms up it seems to smooth out pretty desent???
the thrid problem: every once in awhile when i shut it off all of the lights stay on interior and exterior.
Don't know about the other problems, but the pinging is pretty much normal on some of these things. I know with mine, especially in the summer when it's warmer, it'll ping going up hills unless I use mid-grade fuel, and if I'm towing not even super will keep it from pinging. Sometimes it's so bad I'm afraid it's going to throw a rod! IMHO Ford has a bad problem with pinging in their engines. Every one I've ever owned or driven since the early 90s has had a problem with pinging. Both my Expy and my Ranger ping in the summer.
Some things to try are getting some decent injector cleaner and trying that, make sure your fuel filter is fresh, have you changed the plugs on it yet? Finally as a last ditch effort, the knock sensor may be bad, but it's a pain to change as it's in the valley under the intake and requires you to remove the whole intake to get to.
ya thats how it is sometimes it is so bad i think it is going to break a piston skirt off or thorw a rod!!! it seems to do it year round though.
i just put some injector cleaner in this last fill up so i guess i will see if that helps anything. as far as a new filter goes no i havent tried that yet. is that a pain to change? plugs i havent checked but i think before i got the vehicle new ones were put in. i also thought of the knock sensor but wouldnt that throw a check engine light or something if that were faulty??? is there a test or anything i can do to see if that is bad????
Insufficient EGR flow will cause pinging. Maybe your EGR ports a partially clogged with carbon?
Do you have a "Check Engine Light" on? Or any pending codes?
no right now there is no light on. a couple of weeks ago there was a light on but it said bank 1 to rich i thought maybe a injector stuck for a second or the O2 sensor but i didnt think that had anything to do with the pinging which i could be wrong to. but it also did show a knock sensor code in the memory i think, but that was a long time ago. since i cleared the light last week for bank1 to rich it hasnt came back on yet but i havent put many miles on either.
what would be the fix for the carbon build up on the EGR ports? i ran some sea foam threw it last month i dont know if that has anything to do with that?
I would try cleaning the Mass Air Flow sensor. If it's dirty it can throw the check light saying its running rich like you said. Just pick some MAF cleaner and spray the silver diode that is sticking out until it's nice and shiny silver. let it air dry and I would pull the negative cable for a minute or so to reset everything. good luck
