I posted this over on the Misc. - Transmission forum but thought it might be more appropriate here.
I've been searching the forums for answers before bothering you folks with a problem you may have answered before.
I have a 1992 F150 351 4X4. I've had a hard banging shift into 2nd and 3rd for awhile. You can sometimes baby it into a better shift. I've had the tranny flushed twice with no change. It has now started to not shift down unless you come to a full stop. You can jump on it, back off all you want and it won't shift down without a manual shift. On an easy take off from a stop it will start moving and then drop RPM and act like its going to die. Feather the throttle and it'll go again. Sometimes this happens in first gear and sometimes in second. Other than these little idiosynchrocies it runs great!
look on the data plate in the door jamb to see if it is an E4od
trans code will be an E
if so this is electronically controled
it can be as simple as a bad ground or the infamous MLPS
you should start by checking the codes in the ecu
also go to www.fordfuelinjection.com
look in download files for info on mlps and ground problems
Yep, it's an E. I'll take a look at the link and see what I can find on the acumulator and MLPS. I sure hope it's not a bad ground. Could be hard to find.
I just got back to checking out this problem today. (I've been working on the '99 F250 7.3) I ran the codes using the Engine trouble light. KOEO codes were: 636 - TOT volts out of range, 122 - TPS below .6 volt, 128 - MAP vacuum not less than 2, 634 - TMLPS. KOER: 998 - Hard fault, 122 - TPS below .6 volt
Doing the Engine running checks, it would not run through the Cyl # or motions to follow. It just started with the Hard fault code.
I'm ordering the MLPS to see what that does, but sounds like more problems, maybe? Any comments?

Any help with these codes and possible causes? Why didn't the Engine Running process go as described in the "How to" articles?
Does your speedo work normally? The E4OD relies on the VSS in the rear diff.. as does the speedo, and if it or the wires leading to it are faulty, damaged or connections are dirty/corroded the shifts will get all messed up.

Not all the EEC computers are capable of running every test. For example, the batch fire computers in these trucks cannot do individual cylinder tests because they don't have individual cylinder control.

Speedo works fine. To clear codes and start over, I start the code check sequence and pull pos battery cable while codes are running???

Ignore that last post please.
I have purchased a TH-45 TPS which is not here yet. Problem is, on further research, I believe I purchased the incorrect one for my vehicle (1992 F150 5.8 E4od). It looks like I should have either the TH-44 or the TH-127 ?? I have found both listed for this vehicle. Anyone know which TPS I need?

Just to follow up ....
I changed out the TPS and MLPS and things run like new. Well, almost. I don't know what the code for MAP low vacuum was all about. No check engine light.
Learned more about this EFI in the last week than I had in the last 16 yrs I've owned this pickup. All I've had to do before is change out two alternators.
Manual Lever Position Sensor (MLPS) is on the driver's side of the transmission where the shift linkage attaches. It tells the computer what gear you have selected.
