The stock fan clutch is heavy duty. Look up prices for a gasser compared to a diesel. Almost a $180 difference in price.
I agree with Todd, it's toast.

Took the truck and trailer (loaded) up to the races yesterday....first time I've pulled with it. Last time we pulled anything, we used a 2000 F150 with a 5.4/auto.
Boy the F250 is a world difference in pulling!
But I got sick of hearing the fan wailing away under the hood. Jeez that thing is noisy! I'm going to HAVE to replace the clutch. The Tymar intake (DIY version) is nice too. Above 2000 RPM throttle on the floor, it makes a really nice high pitch whistle. Subtle, but it is there.
The other issue is that that stupid auto transmission is a turd. Seems like it locks the converter between 2nd and 3rd gear, right at the 2-3 shift. Quite annoying especially in town with a heavy load on the back. Any fix for this? Shift kit maybe? It's VERY annoying!
Other than that, and only having 3.55 rear gear...(thought it was a 3.73 but I looked at the tag and confirmed that it is 3.55)...3.55 means that it's almost on the floor on the freeway at 70 mph. I'm pulling almost 8000 lbs. What is a better option, 3.73 or 4.10? Truck gets a mixed city/highway driving. I like the truck--pulls good but crappy fuel mileage.
Going to have to get a downpipe and kat delete though. Did one on my brother's '97 and it made a big difference in response. And since these older pickups have a non-wastegated turbo, they require RPM to make boost....and the downpipe will help turbo response quite a bit.
Thanks for all your help and suggestions. I always did like this site, especially the diesel tech sections, just for this reason. Lots of great information.

Mods are listed in my signature. I'd go with the 4.10s if you haven't changed them yet.
