Fan and Fan Clutch

Hi all, Just a quick question. I've seen many threads about people hearing a loud whooshing noise--the fan clutch engaging the fan. I have never heard that noise. I don't have aftermarket gauges. The coolant gauge usually hovers a little below the half way mark. Recently, now that it's warmer outside and the A/C is being used, the needle hovers closer to the halfway point. I haven't been doing a lot of towing recently, but I'm afraid the truck is running a little warm because the fan isn't engaging. Is there any way I can tell if the fan clutch is just shot? Thanks in advance for the replies. The truck is a 2005 with the 6.0 Powerstroke. William

It has to be around a 100 degrees out and pulling a load for my fan to come on. I think the cooling system is pretty well designed on the 03 thru 07 6.0's.

There is some talk that the 6.4s have an undersized cooling system....

But so far, the 6.0s --- especially for the derated E vans.... do good.

I would recommend adding gauges to get true temp readings. The stock gauges are useless. When the stock gauge reading go up it is to late. I recommend getting the Edge Insight Multi Gauge it just plugs into the OBD11 port. It will show oil temp; coolant temp; volts; trans temp and more. It will show fuel pressure with the optional THERMOCOUPLE (EGT PROBE)

I have a 135K on my '03 6.0 and have never heard the fan whoosh.

I have the AE for my laptop but am thinking about the Edge Insight for daily use.

My '03 still has the EGT sensor, don't know if the EGT probe is needed....will have to look into that.

How does an EGT Thermocouple correlate to fuel pressure? Did I miss something??

Sorry my mistake cj Senior Moment I guess I meant Thermocouple for EGT's..I know you need a separate gauge for Fuel Pressure..

Checking ECT with a real gauge would be good to put your mind at ease. And the Insight is great. But I can tell you that your OEM gauge will show the middle of the range at about 160°F and still show the middle of the range at 210°F. In other words, useless, and I don't think you have anything to worry about. Hook up a big trailer and pull a grade, and then I'll bet you hear your fan.

Lately it has been fairly warm around here, having a 16 mile trip one way to work, coming home I have 3-4 stop lights and with the a/c on the fan will come on when I take off from them. No a/c, no fan most of the time. Gaugr in the norm range since new to me, its a 06' 4x4 cc F250, no mods. and no extra gauges. 81k on it now, should i start to be thinking a posible pluged oil cooler ?

Two quick questions. I assume it does both ect and eot? And how accurate is the mpg feature?

Sorry to highjack.

It does do both. In the mornings after cooling all night, my ECT-EOT-TFT are all within a degree of each other.

MPG's, well that is as accurate as anything else with MPG. For example, yesterday, I fueled and the gauge said I used 30.8 gallons. The fuel jockey topping off the tank put in 29.6 gallons. Not close enough to get real accurate in my view.

I can't find it in the tech folder, does anyone have a write up on how to replace the fan clutch?
