Spline Question

Hey guys, I got a 89 F-150 with a 302. With the standard 8.8 in the rear and a Dana 44 in the front and I'm going to put 4.56 gears in both and i'm lookin in to getting spools for both, but dont no the spline and I haven't ripped it a part yet does any one no what they would be. I do know the back can be a 28 or 31. But don't no the front. Can any one help.

spool in a TTB front? spool in a 8.8

Try the search function and do some reading.

Please tell me you are going with a 38" or bigger tire.

My 8.8 on my 85 F-150 never broke running 39 M/Ts with a mild 302. The front broke a few times. No rock crawling, just spinning in the sand.

with a spool?

i am a fan of teh 8.8 for sure for putting up with the abuse ive given them over the years, never any breaks just twisted splines...

but 39's are to big for a 8.8 if you actually wheel it.....now if its just a mall crawler or spinning in sand i can see it lasting a while.....

I just thought of running spools but what else can I run. lockers just seem so expensive. The truck is used for truc pulls and mud runs and some everyday use.

Front 30

Rear 31

You should be relatively ok with 36 inch tires or less going a locker route becasue of the greater stress caused by a locker and 39s.

Your best bet would be to use a selectable, limited slip or something like a aussie or detroit in the rear.

But whatever you do DO NOT LOCK THE FRONT!!!!!!!!!!!!

what kind of pulls are you doing that a 8.8 holds up too??? they are a great axle for what they are imo, but theres a reason why they are only in rangers and f150s.

if your serious into offroad you need to invest in a better front end.....your front now is really lacking in strength, especially if you fully lock it, spool or locker, its not going to last.....how big of tires are you planning to run?

I see the efi 302 and its screaming torque spinning the hell out the tires.

If lockers are too expensive maybe you should reconsider your build
