460 Overheating Now What?

Just redid the heads on my 786 F350 with a 460. Before it had a miss but that was an exhaust valve. It was not overheating before I took the heads off.

now i have them back on and changed the T-Stat but still overheating. Warms up really quick and as soon as you head down the street the temp will jump to between 230-250 Help. Any ideas?????

Try it without the thermostat.

But that was my problem when my water pump died. It was fine at idle, but hot under load.

I believe the gaskets are on right because they have "Front" printed on them so I firmly believe they are on right.

The truck has NO HEAT inside the cab either. I'm confident the T-Stat is in right (Pretty hard to screw that one up).

Do you mean the impeller to the water pump shaft? Wouldn't the water pump leak, or at minimum give some type of indication that it has failed (ie. pulley wobble, bearing whine, something. I don't have any reason to think the water pump is faulty but that and the radiator are suspect simply because this is the natural progression to take for troubleshooting.

Please keep the suggestions coming. I want my beast running cool.

If I try it without the T-Stat it would probably overheat anyway since the coolant would not be held up long enough to be cooled.

No offense, but you'd be shocked what I have to fix after other people work on stuff that seems easy

"Well, me and my buddys had a six pack of beer and decided to put a tune on 'er, now she just don't run right" kind of stuff.

Not to mention that I bought a brand new thermostat last week, and it is bad right out of the box.

No heat is a big indicator of a bubble being traped in the cooling system.

Did you yank the tstat and try it yet?

make sure you have the heat cranked all the way up. while you bleed the air. Otherwise, air will get to the heater core valve and stop.

If you have a funel that fits in the radiator, the easiest way to bleed the air is to put the funnel in the radiator, and fill with fluid about halfway. Then run the car untill you see a big bunch 'o bubbles or untill all smaller bubles stop. I usually let it run a minute, and then give it a good bit of gas to get the water moving and pop the tstat open. Shouldn't take longer than 5 minutes, if you have a good tstat.

one hint on thermostats that I learned a long time ago (when I worked at a chebbie dealership and had problems with the 3.1L V6 all the time) take an 1/8" drill bit and drill at least one I prefer to holes in the outside flange of the thermostat, this will allow any air trapped under it o escape easily but not enough flow to cause any issues with the cooling system. simple easy and works everytime (on vertical mounted units just make sure the hole is aligned at the top)

You could just fill it without the thermostat housing on. If that isn't the problem, make sure the exhaust gaskets are on right. They will go on either way but one way will block enough of the port off to cause it to run hot.

I agree with fdude64 that there is a problem with the head gaskets. It was fine before the heads came off and now there's a problem. Head gaskets will cause the exact problem you are complaining about, including no heat in the cab with an overheated motor.
