I am considering purchasing a 1995 Bronco, but after the test drive, when I got out I noticed the driver's side front tire tilted in at the top towards the engine bay,but the passenger side tire was not tilted,on the test drive I also found the vehicle wanting to pull to the right slightly as well was wanting to "wander" a little.
Is the leaning left front tire a sign of a problem,if so what could it be?
I have 2 F-150's a 1981 4x2 (bought it brand new) and a 1984 4x4 and I have noticed neither of them have the left front tires leaning, and neither of them pull or "wander".
The Bronco is in very good condition otherwise,it has the 5.8 and automatic transmission, the dealership is asking $1995.00 for it. It is an Eddie Bauer edition.
Would it be worth the asking purchase price?
Thanks in advance,
Jeff
$2000 from a lot is not very much at all for that Bronco. I would look it over very carefully for problems. The leaning tire could be a simple alignment problem or something much more serious. The pull/wander is also likely an alignment issue. All TTB and twin I-beam Ford trucks are known for having alignment issues.
Also check the tranny fluid and make sure it's not burnt. That is one expensive tranny to have rebuilt. If it has auto hubs, replace them. If it has an electronic t-case, make sure the shift motor works in it.
That wheel that is leanning in has a negative camber problem. Can most likely be fixed by a good alignment shop. Could also have some worn front suspension parts.
Both of my tires leaned in "/ \" . Alignment shop installed cams and fixed it but not cheap. Like others, that low price makes me suspicious. I love my 5.8 '94 EB. The '95 will have the transmission upgrade but test the fluid and also see if you can feel the shifts but don't expect a really firm shift. Lift out the air filter as oil in the air box may indicate blow by if the tube is connected to the valve cover. A small oil puddle under the bell housing gives it character. Does A/C work?
As it turns out,all 4 ball joints need replaced, and I was at the dealership yesterday morning right when they opened,it was 1 degree farenheit then, the Bronco was very difficult to get started,as it was turning over,I could hear it trying to fire and as it did,I heard sort of a popping sound coming from the air intake,(sounded like a carbureted vehicle back firing thru the carburetor),however once it started,it seemed to run fine, now that starting issue has me concerned, and mind you,I was test driving it the evening before,so it only sat overnight for about 14hrs. As a side note, the dealership just replaced the plugs, plug wires and fuel filter on the first day I test drove it.
well for that price ask them to replace all the ball joints and install a new battery. if they wont do that tell them you wont offer more then 1500 because you are going to have to fix those problems. It would also be worth while taking it into the ford dealer and having them check it out. 1hr of shop time would be worth it in my mind. Or if you know of a very reputible shop.
Great advice!,yes,I really hate to pass this one up as it really looks nice and all the accessories work, has a little rust but nothing major, funny this that the check engine light was not on,I just got off the phone with the dealership and told them that I would like to have those problems fixed before I purchase the vehicle, but they told me that they were selling it as is and it is not their policy to repair a vehicle before they sell it,however they did offer me to repair the ball joints at their cost, would cost me 100-150 for all 4 ball joints.
I may go out there in a bit and try to work them down on the price.I did neglect to mention that the dealership is not a Ford dealership, more or less a private dealership.
The only problem with getting a small lot dealer to fix problems is that they are concerned with their bottom line. They don't care about the quality of parts they're installing, or the quality of work. You will likely end up doing the job again in a year or two. All four ball joints is roughly a $600-$800 job on that truck.
Just because the CEL is not lit doesn't mean there aren't trouble codes.
again take it to a shop to have checked out. if there is an issue say with the tranny for instance it can cost as much if not more then what the bronco is worth to have fixed. or in this situation the ball joints are bad but what else is worn in the front end could drive the price up to $1000 to have fixed. to pay 1 hours worth of shop time to save a couple grand would be wise.
